Freelander 1 knocks and rattles

Hmmm, I must check mine as I had a complete new set fitted yesterday.

I never trust anybody but my self to do them

The Freelander is fussy about tyres. All tyres MUST be the same make, type and size, with least worn on the rear, and the pressure needs to be set accurately too. If this isn't strictly adhered to, the 4X4 system WILL fail.
