Hi all
can somone shed some light on this one!
I've got a 2000 1.8 five door and just this week noticed it's devloped a loud knock when reversing on full lock.
I thought it could be a front CV joint but it happends both left and right hand lock and not when going forward?

Something to do with the gearbox/clutch I would have thought, if it only happens when reversing - just guesssing though!

colud be your rear diff mounts or even worse your idr. mine was making that noise and it was the ird. expensive as well to have it replaced also its worth checking your vcu as well

Well call me silly as well Mad Hat Man but wot is th VCU???? and wot does it do????

It's the Viscous Coupling Unit !

It connect the back wheels to the the gearbox (sort of)

But it dunt connect it all the time, Just when it needs 4 wheel drive (Its magic). If it seizes up,so it drives the rear wheels all the time it wears out the IRD (gearbox bit) and the rear diff.Or it just dunt work at all, (No rear wheel drive).

Lots of info on here, have a good read up and frighten yerself daft ! ;)

Thanks for the info, great forum. :)
I do own a Freelander but I havn't driven it yet as I am in Malta and the car is waiting to be shipped next week, then 13 days on a ferry to get here so another 3 weeks to go then I will be a fully fledged Landie owner.

 then the bills will really start coming in.

I have pics which I just drool over and cant wait to drive it, will be a bit of a difference from driving my current car. a Smart convertible. :D :D :D

I did used to own a Grand Cherokee before though.

Does anyone know if the Gallery is working as I tried to make my album but it wont upload, sorry if I hijacked the thread a bit.

cheers guys it looks like both the IRD & VCU. Went to the main dealers and they are asking A$2100 for the IRD and A$3700 for the VCU. I don't know why the VCU is so exy unless it comes complete with the drive shafts?
anyway I have removed them both and found the problem with the IRD. The two Taper roller bearings holding the crownwheel in place are worn. there is a bit of damage on the two gears but nothing to worry too much about i'm going to replace all the bearings & seals in the box and see how it goes. not looked at the VCU yet but don't know if I should be able to spin half the shaft at a time by hand or does it require some torque anybody know??

hi coxy,

as far as I can see the forces exercised on the VCU are rather high, so turning by hand seems to me to be impossible, as said in another thread I jacked up one wheel yesterday and tried to turn it, with the whole wheel as lever, and was only able to move it just a bit like a centimeter at a time. Wait a couple of seconds, take another deep breath and with all strength available in the old casco:D :D :D could again move it a little bit, so off the car just turn it by hand ????

cheers guys the freelander is now back on the road. It cost me about $120 all in with oils and sealant, the hardest part of the whole job was getting the oil heater/cooler out of the box in one piece and then re-sealing it again.

Had the same problem on my 2000 1.8 and Stratstone told me it was a strut mount bearing that had gone. They repaired it under warranty so I dont know what it cost. But since they repaired it the car has developed a metalic click sound at the offside rear area which someone else mentioned in another thread. Cant help thinking the two problems are related.

I also get a sound a bit like a marble rattling round in a plastic cup, although that's not too loud!?
