Up **** creek.
Hi, ive noticed recently that occasionally when driving at 60+MPH when i go over an uneven/bumpy surface the steering wheel "knocks", the best way to describe it is it feels like the steering wheel has about 3-4mm play vertically and when i go over a bump it "knocks", there is no actual play on the steering wheel. Any ideas? steering damper looks quite tired.

Me too - I am going to replace the damper as well as the box, as mine is leaking (td5). I suspect the combination of these two will fix it.

Another possibility imho might be to adjust steering box backlash? - not sure about this one, and not going to try as my box is knackered!

wye eye David Pye (sorry mate couldnt resist:)) i think i'll put a new damper on as mine is looking pretty old and starting to mist and they dont cost much, i'll let you know if it solves it.

my box still looks and feels good and i think you will get either sloppy or stiffer steering if you have steering gear backlash, apparently a bitch of a job, and one left for the experts. I would look at getting a second hand one from a breakers on ebay if i needed a replacement.
