Sorry but I can't find the thread in which people said they had knocking noise in the steering when running over bumps.

I have the same problem when running over traffic bumps of rough terrain, this on the left hand side (LHD car), around 2002/2003 on the US (Yank) Freelander forum (at that time I was not aware this forum existed, was not at all internetspecialist as I'm still not now thus can't find the thread in question..:D) I was told it might be the steering demper, the thick copper piece located on the steering column under the steering airbag, at that time I had a look at it but couldn't find anything wrong with it so I decided to live with that knocking, until I read the (for me impossible to find) thread in which a member said the pignon on the steering rack was off some 20 degrees, and another member said he checked and corrected it as well. So today I had a look at mine and the left one was off as well, don't know how many degrees but took a pic. before and after, so now I'm curious to see how things will be tomorrow morning. Before I could see the rubber bus underneath the scale at the back and after refitting the scale covers the whole rubber bush very nicely. Hope things will be ok for now. (After 9+ years ......;):):):))

Could be Willo, was there any play in the ball joint?

Normally the drop links make a knocking noise

You can keep us updated

That's one clean engine bay :) no doubt to stop dirt getting on the marble tile floor in your garage ;)

9yrs with a twisted ball (joint) Will  You must be relieved you fixed it at last.

No more noises in the undercarriage department. :D

Will see how things will be tomorrow morning. Just went to the garage and tried to move the ball joint but it's all steady and firm. As for the clean wheelarch and so, I just powercleaned the car on monday, it was 2 months ago, so one has to keep things doing on a regular (???:D) basis to make sure not to loose the practice of it you see .....

Fortunately it didn't hurt, that's why I could stand it for 9+ years .... (Always wearing wide trousers though, not the tight tigh things.....:D:D:D a disadvantage of the wide clothing was the sound of bells all the time....:hysterically_laughi)

No wonder I couldn't find the post, it was on the competitor's forum....:D:D:D:D

Anyway, think it is all between the ears but today I have not heard a single knock, and even this is almost impossible seen the very limited twist I had to make but it feels as if the steering is more "at ease" now. It feels as the car drives more homogeneous now. Curious to see whether tomorrow I will still have the same feeling....
