Hi All

I've got a jerky box in reverse!

LT77 on a 300TDI, 90

Every time I reverse its really jerky and the cogs feel as though they are trying to climb over each other. Not sure if its the gear box or the transfer box.

It feels/sounds expensive, has anyone had this problem, any ideas? really hoping its not a new box that I need!!!!!:(
 
missing tooth on reverse gear, I had it on a LT77 same thing horrible all because somone snatched reverse and let the clutch out before it engaged properly
 
If you drain the box you may well find the broken tooth although it wount help you other than proving what it is.
 
It didn't seem to have the problem before I took it to the local garage for a check up, Mother F*&king B*$£@ds, F*&@£$g suppost to know what they are doing.

Is there any solution other then new box??? please some one have a solution.
 
Well Don't be so hasty, mabe its not what I describe it could be many other things its not in difflock is it? Sounds silly but.....
its been done before.

Mabe take a look over it from top to bottom, or take it back saying what has happened if they are half decent they should at least look over it for you and find out what the problem is.
 
You sound like my wife but your probably right, just don't like someone breaking my baby, if I do it its bad, but I can beat myself up about it but when someone else does it well!!!

I'll go and double check the difflock and have a word with the garage tomorrow, see what happens. Will let you know the results.

I think I actually love you, difflock it was, just reversed it round the block and no judders jerks or otherwise. Dam garage!!!!

Thank you soooooooo much, just made my weekend. It may have been an obvious one to you but I never even thought to check.

Well people will try and scare you saying about Transmission wind up, but dont worry it will be ok.
How many miles have you done with it engaged?
 
Sometimes the simplest things are overlooked :D , cant beat some Trans~ wind up tho lol but glad its not a box prob tho :D .
 
Only done about 15 miles and none at speed so hope it hasn't done any damage.

The guy gave me a list of other work that needs done, track rod arms, ball joints but I'll d that myself just the box I was really worried about.
 
Na nothing to worry about. if you would have said 115 then it may be more of a concern but then again not that much. aslong as the transmission diffs etc are all filled with oil it has done no harm. I have driven for many miles in difflock during the snow when grip was limited and then good and then limited at speed up to 60mph so don't worry. Jai
 
At least on snow Jai you wont get much if any wind up - on dry roads you will .

The garage should of known better than to leave it in lock !!!! me thinks you be better off doing the work yourself :) .

I will be doing as much myself as I can, thats why I bought it. I've go an A4 out side where I need to take it to the garage to chance a headlight. I thought screw that so I got my 90. That and the fact I have always wanted one. A dream come true, almost shattered but thanks to you guys, I'm a happy man once again.

The snow was patchy on offroad tyres. So nothing to worry about. I believe unless you have excellent grip, decent road tyres on a extremly grippy surface good tarmac the tyres will slip before you cause anylasting damage. Most tyres will give before causing any damage. You will increase wear on components yes agreed but 15 miles thats nothing. It was a big thing when defenders first come out and RR's were left in difflock for many hundreds of miles by people not noticing anything and kept driving until somthing broke or the next service was due.
 
I have never seen a transferbox or anything let go souly because of transmission wind up. Components do break but mainly because other things are not sorted or excessive wear. Lack of oil in key drivetrain components and or poorly maintained vehicles that have not been serviced for a long period or even looked after. Then IF difflock was engaged and transmission wind up occours then this may be a contributing factor but not the outright cause. I have had this with a Drive member it went after being put into difflock onm the road. In reality it was utterly shagged to begin with but may have done another few miles under less stress.

People seem to be paranoid about transmission windup. Yes its a bad bad thing but in this case and most cases nothing to worry about. The haynes manual and other litritaure will tell you that if it is engaged your vehicle will explode into a million pieces, the wheels will fall off and the vehicle will crash and destroy itself. In truth yes it may have worn some key compoinents more than normal but no lasting damage will have been caused if the vehicle is correctly maintained as it should be. Jai
 
I agree with the maintainance whole hartedly and another factor is the amount of ware in the drive train in general , but from experiance and vehicles Ive worked on with wind up can and does make a mess !! . The biggest one I worked on was a military MAN 4x4 ( i know its bigger than a landy but the principles are the same ) . that distroyed the transfer box - it snapped the outputs clean off it and onto the floor !!!! .

At the end of the day wind up isnt the best thing to have happen :) .
 
Never seen anything like that on a LR. A military Humvee had a bad time dragging the both rear wheels when they locked up that made a mess, suspected Diff fault, but nothing on an LR to date.
