howdy. i have a 2000 freelander 1.8
when i change in to 2nd gear i get a knocking or a thumping noise from the rear.
could it be the IRD or the propshaft. to be honest with you i dont know what is what so any help would be very grateful.
thanks

You lot need a full health check up.

It will be your rear diff mounts as mentioned in the MHM post, its a 1/2 hour job with a ramp and abour £20 for the bushes.

Nothing too drastic.

Does it knocked/thumped everytime you change into 2nd gear?

This could be the a couple of components from the transmission, and everything from the front propshaft to the rear diff ("final drive") is worth checking.

My money would be one of the three mounts for the rear diff, particularly the front one. This can wear and allow too much play in the rear propshaft. In extreme cases, this can cause the rear UJ on the rear propshaft to grind at the fuel tank!

The Haines manual has a good description of the transmission so Irecommend a read of that with a cuppa and then a trip to a friend with a good set of axle stands or an inspection pit.

Cheers
