Test 1B is to the Starter Solenoid and not the realy....

The start solenoid is on the starter motor itself (i believe)

I attach the wire colours...

hiya
on test a there is a plug being tested is this one that goes into the bottom of the fuse box? and if so what colour??
I put the tester into all the ignition relay teminals and the starter relay terminals earlier and there were 2 out of 5 live ones in the ignition relay place and 2 out of 4 live in starter relay place without even having the key in, surely there is only supposed to be 1 live until the key is turned!??
also looked under the car and noticed the wire he put in does go to the starter solenoid but there is a wire hanging down near it which looks to be the original one taken off, but i can't see the termnal for it to slide back on and it's very awkward to get to,
does anyone have a pic of a p38 starter motor (on the car) so i can see what it should look like!! i'm wondering if it's been taken off because it was permenently on or something!

Richieb,

I have the same problem with mine.

I have a push button on the dashboard that connects to the starter relay. Basically when pushed it bridges the relay contact and fires up the starter motor.

I've checked all the wiring and it looks like my BECM is just not sending the signal to operate the relay.

I just think of my button as an extra bit of security.

I'll be following this thread to see if you can solve it. It might help me solve mine!!

Hello mate
sounds similar but my ignition doesn't all come on with the key so that relay's been bridged to a switch too!! I still rekon it could be the fuse box itself but i'm lost so luckily rick is coming to look next week!!
my button goes all the way to the starter solenoid!!
good luck i'll keep you posted mate

Hi,
Just ben searching the forum and found this thread, my '97 ES V8 Auto has just refused to turn over on the key, relays are clicking but nothing at the starter it seems. I left the igntion on and put 12v direct from the battery to the solenoid and turned over and fired up !
Then it will fire up fine off the key as many times as I tried.
Only done this twice though, first one last night where it finally turned on the key, second one today at home which eventually needed the wire bypass... where should I look first?

I assume I should be looikng at checking all connections and the starter relay ?>
Thanks
Stu

Hi there,
sounds very similar to my problem, sounds like the starter solenoid in the becm,
mine was that and a few other things blown up,
Then I found Rick the Pick on here and he is not only a genius but a very very nice bloke, I would send him a message mate, I had many sleepless nights before emailing him and wish I had just found him sooner!
mine is all sorted now and it didn't cost as much as I thought, don't go to the dealer because they will just send it to him to rebuild! cut out the middle man! I can send you his phone number if you pm me and then you can chat to him, say Richie highly reccommended him!
cheers

just another thing, take the fusebox lid off and feel which relays click when key turned to start, mine was making the fan relays click and that was after replacing the fuse box! that's when I knew something was seriously wrong and out of my depth!!
