Just bought a p38 two days ago, despite reading all the horror stories. I have within 48 hours got my first problem. The key is stuck in the ignition, it has done this now four times, this time I can't get it back. Also the central locking activates it's self whilst driving along. I am told these are two separate problems and are not connected. Any ideas?:(

The central locking locking itself while going along will be one of the door latch mechanisms failing, thats pretty much the usual cause. Do any of the doors not lock or report they are open while going along??

As for the key stuck in the ignition, er, hmm, never heard of that!! Have you made sure you have turned the key completely all the way to 0 (off)??
Erm <thinks> is the key completely straight and not bent in any way?? Try a little bit of WD40?? When you get the key out make sure its completely straight.

Let us know how you get on!

Not sure if this applies to RR's but on a car I had previously the key could only be removed if the vehicle was left in Park. Have you only the one key.

Thanks for the replies. Still no joy though, have tried wd40. Auto box in park with foot on clutch/footbrake. Ignition is definently in 0 position. Took car to a land rover specialist who also drew a blank, then told me new ignition barrel was needed and would have to be done at main dealer as the key fob needs to be reprogrammed. Looks like I am going to have to bite the bullet and let the local main dealer take the shirt off my back! Unless anyone else can help me.
Thanks for trying.

Shouldn't use wd40 or any type of oil in the locks, it just encorages dirt and grit to stick in the mechanisms although it may appear to work in the short term, far better to get some graphite powder from a locksmith and try squirting some into the keyway. It would be better if you could get hold of a key blank to work it back and forth as there would be less likleyhood of that key jamming

I have a similar problem with SWMBO's auto Volvo c70, I found the problem to be with the push in lever on the gear stick. If it's not managing to come out fully the key won't come out. even if it's by a fraction.

Well the plot thickens. I took the car to a main dealer and was quite surprised by the reply I got. They said because the car was dual fuel they would n't even look at it and added they did n't even want it on site. Has anyone else experienced this? Not a great first impression of the dealer network. The key did finally come out when I got home though. Would I be better off getting a locksmith to rebuild the lock? That is assuming The key is not stuck again. thanks for the replies and I will see if Alane's point makes any difference.

hi, hubby is auto locksmith and thinks you may have a burr on your key have a look and if you find one just file it down carefully with a small file hope this helps. looney.

yeh, go on, tell us.

I dont see any problem, letting everyone who has gas know where they are not wanted.

wonder what they would say if you wanted a trade in price against a bran new soopercharged sport.

My local main dealer CDG has no problems with LPG, even remarked that it was one of the neatest installs they had seen.

Well I have no problem naming and shaming said dealer.............. M J Fews at Charfield, Gloucestershire.
When I win big on the lottery (as we all no dobut will) and I want to spend a big slice of it on a new RR, I will be sure to look a little further afield for a dealer.
Still on the bright side Alane was spot on about the problem. Although the l.e.d says the car is in park, the lever hadn't clicked into place. So all is well in the world again.:D Still got the issue with the central locking but for the time being I am going to put up with it and just enjoy driving it around. Thanks for all the replies and big thanks to Alane.

just a thought on the central locking 'problem': is it that they just lock themselves the once as you drive off ? my f-in-law bought a disco II a few years back and it used to freak him out doing this. it turned out the body computer was set to 'florida mode' where the locks actuate automatically to counter car-jacking. it required a lot of faffin about with the door key following the instruction book to defeat the option.

on the subject of lpg conversions and the dealer disliking them:
is it true that there is no certification process on lpg fitments in uk? in other words you can d.i.y. it. if that is the case then i might have a little sympathy for himm.
here in australia we have loads of lpg vehicles but they must be certified. i am a firefighter and we excercise extreme caution when lpg is involved. its bloody nasty stuff when it doesn't stay where its meant to be. it expands at a ratio of 270 to 1 then add a 'perfect' amount of air, say 90% and that means the average 70 litres of lpg liquid in a large tank can provide you with, if my maths are right, nearly 190,000 cubic litres of explosive mixture.now you know why it is the new weapon of choice for terrorists. the 'smoke' the paramedics saw in london was no doubt the white fog that lpg looks like in a high concentrations of vapour .the technical term for what they have been trying, thankfully unsucessfully, to achieve is a B.L.E.V.E. or Boiling Liquid Expanding Vapour Explosion. we remember it as a Bloody Loud Extremely Violent Explosion. so your dealer is actually quite wise to want to avoid the possibility of a bodgy fitment leaking gas all through his workshop overnight because he's the bloke who opens up the next day and flicks on the light !
i believe the bali bomb was a sucessful demonstration of the nightmare that is lpg.

i see this once on tv, a tanker was on fire and when it went my god did it go!!

you have to go into the solenoid behind the key entry and disconnect the solenoid or unplug the battery and it will allow you the key back... im not happy or pleased with my land rover. yea everyone thinks it nice but its the first and last I will buy with them. they had even hired dat nyug5en from cowboys to be spokesman but the car they gave him in the deal h6e in turn g5ave to his wife died on her and that was a deal breaker. they need to make better quality cars...

It's only septic cars that are badly built UK European and japanese models are built to much higher standards than the ****e we off load on the septics..

The key comes out with the auto box lever in any position on my 2000 DHSE?
I can confirm the auto locking on Yankee cars, the last one I drove as soon as you selected a gear all the doors locked, so I'm sure that must be a possible feature on the
P38 as it sold in the US in large numbers.
