Are the engine imobiliser and alarm/central locking completely separate systems?

My key 2 has never worked and I've being trying to fettle it today.

It will start the car fine, so it's talking to the ignition barrel. It says Ignition Key in.

It will manually lock and unlock ALL doors providing the alarm wasn't on. In other words, if the car is already unlocked, Key 2 will lock all doors by turning it in the drivers door and will likewise unlock all doors by turning it in the drivers. But not by using the buttons.

However, if the car was locked up with Key 1, then Key 2 will physically unlock the drivers door, but the central locking won't activate on the other doors and neither will it take the alarm off.

It is transmitting because if I can pick it up on a radio receiver.

I assume therefore, that it's just way out of sync and none of the sync methods I've found will fix it. Is it worth getting a stealer to program it? Will Nanocom do the trick (because the £140 I'd save could go towards buying one). Or is it a new key time?

Any ideas?

tnx

What year is the car? If the LED on the FOB flashes when you put it in the ignition that implies it is a post 99 car. On mine key 2 is rarely used and therefore the rolling code goes out of range.
The proceedure is, having locked the car on the button with FOB 1, unlock with the key of FOB 2, only the drivers door will unlock, put the key in the ignition with the drivers door open and all the other doors will unlock. The rolling code is now re-synced and the FOB should operate. Test by removing the key, shutting the door and locking with the FOB button.
If it does not open the other doors when placed in the ignition it has not re-synced, either the FOB is faulty, or it is the same number FOB as the working FOB or you have the earlier version P38 without the coil in the ignition barrel. If it's the latter the re-sync method is different.
Neither Nanocom or a Dealer is needed.:)

Right, thanks all. I've been trying to sort this off and on since end of August when I got the car and it finally worked today. I locked it on Fob1, unlocked it with the key of fob2 and of course the alarm goes off, but nothing happened when I inserted the key. No lights flashing on the key fob. I hadn't tried it before, so I was really hopeful.

So I tried again, but this time, I left the drivers door open. Locked it on Fob1, it locks but bleeps to say the door is open. Unlocked it manually with fob2 and put fob2 in the ignition. This time, the lights on the fob flashed and now it works!!

But now, coz I locked it and unlocked it with the drivers door open, the courtesy light stopped working on that door. So I went through my discovered courtesy light fix of opening the offending door, pressing and holding the light until it says "lights off" on the dash. Then again until it says "lights on". Then alarming the car and then unlocking the car. Then shutting the door and repeating the whole procedure. That fixed the courtesy lights and now the light comes on when all doors open. I spotted this a while ago and read that it was common that the drivers door fails to operate the courtesy light. But I fixed it on mine by messing about with the light and alarm. Worth a shot if yours doesn't work. Stupid bloody computerised car! :)

Its a 2002 P38 BTW.

2 working keys!! :)

thanks
