My key fob hasn't been working very well recently (i have to stand really close to the car, press it a couple of times before it works, havent tried changing the batteries but normally the car tells you if the batteries are dying) so i thought id start using key fob 1, see if that works any better (an it looks almost brand new) but it wont unlock an lock the car??

It starts it fine an deactivates the immobiliser, and the little light flashes when i press the button, so i have no idea.

I thought that the fobs resync every time you start the engine so theres no need to press any fiddly button nonsense, am i right?

Anyone got any ideas??

According to Rave for NAS Spec (North American Spec), if the car is unlocked, press the lock button and lock the car with the key. Vice-versa if the car is locked. But mine's a 98 and I'm sure it re-synched the spare key by inserting it into the ign. Not at home at the moment so can't try anything or check the handbook.

Another thread -

98 was the year when they changed the synching I believe. Could be either way described. The other way is to do the 4 times trick which is, key in lock and holding the lock button, turn the key to lock then back to vertical, release button, press unlock and turn to unlock position, return to vertical and release button. Repeat four times and that should be it. We have a 97 and a 2000 model which do it DW's ways respectively and used to have a 1998 which did it the third way as I have described. Try all three.

I recognise that quote above!!

A problem I have, even doing all the synching is that if I do one key it locks out the other. I resynch it and the other one stops working and vice versa......

thanks ill give them i try i always thought you could have two keys working together cause if you unlock the door with one the memory seats go to that position along with the mirrors an stuff. well thats what is says in the manual anyway.

Ill try that way inabit an let you know.

On the year 2000 DHSE I'm sure it say's a max of 3 keys. I have Key 1 and Key 2 and both work fine:D

Well all I had to do was put the key in the lock holding the lock button
and turn it to lock an it flashed a couple of times an now works fine thankyou
cheers

Glad it worked. The thing about mine is the link rod attachment inside the drivers door between the key hole and the lock actuator is broken so I cant do the key turn trick until I put a new handle on. £40 from main dealer so I'd best get round to it next week.

All P38's come with a maximum of 4 keys numbered 1-4. I have 3 keys one works great the other 2 have problems, so I've only got the chance of ordering 1 more key. So I may have the car running for another 8 years of key life if I dont drop dead or the block gives way . Dealer price should be around £110 and should re sync no probs.

You can replace a dead FOB 1 to 3 no problem, the problem comes if you have one key and don't know which number it is as you take the chance that you will get another of the same number then only one will will synch.
