Freelander 1 K Series Engine Identification

Does anyone know how to identify the difference between a 18K16 and a K18 type engine please?

Using some diagnostics and all it tells me is that the first one is 117bhp and the second one 120bhp !

The K series is normally rated 118 Bhp, but the mapping does vary to to suit the application. For the Freelander, only 2 K 1.8 engines were fitted. The pre 2001 had the distributor cap on the exhaust cam and non sequential injection. The later installation used a DIS ignition system and sequential fuel injection. There are differences in the emission control stuff too.

The diagnostics reader might just want to know what management system is fitted.?

I think there's a typo somewhere, or some confusion in the literature that has been supplied. I've never heard of a K-series with a "K18" code. All 4-cylinder K-series engine codes start 18K4 - 1.8 litre K-series, 4-cylinder. The next four characters tell you the "dressing code" - all Freelanders had non-VVC engines, so the next letter would be "F". The next three letters tell you the approximate age at manufacture and what spec it was delivered in etc.

In this case, "18K16" and "K18" are essentially the same I think. All 1.8 litre multi-point injection engines had 118bhp, or 120PS (the exception being the TF135 with 135PS, but this was never fitted to Freelander).

The only difference the computer needs to know is whether it is pre- or post 2001 (i.e. EU2 or EU3) - as the former will use Rover specific diagnostic protocols, whereas the latter will work with EOBD (similar to OBD2) protocols. How that may relate to the confusing nomenclature you've found, I have no idea. Only one way to find out - the two diagnostic protocols are mutually exclusive and will only work on either EU2 or EU3 engines but never both.
