Just got my 1.8i Freelander, and thinking of fitting a K&N replacement panel air filter.

I know that the results you get in terms of performance and/or economy varies depending on the rest of the air intake set up, has anyone else fitted one of these and noticed any difference in performance or economy (I am mostly concerned with economy though!);)

Apparently K&N get the thumbs down for cone type, they suffer from heat soak.

ITG seem to be better quality and they are supposed to be fit and forget.

I recently cut one up to fit the FL intake system, they say you shouldnt wash them. I did and applied a coating of glycerol to get the dust to stick to the foam.

They shouldnt really affect the economy, that depends how you drive. Cold air intake gives better combustion and better power/mix ratio which should equate to better economy.

Something like a Vader induction intake will boost power and they do sound like Darth vader. Pricey though at £180, I am thinking about modding the cold and warm air intake on my FL, with flexible piping.

Open up airbox and remove the short piece of funnel in the upper section

they are ok on petrol, but i dont think you would notice any mpg improvement. . .but er waste of space on a doosle td4 as it could contaminate the maf sensor. . .:)

I have one on my Wifes TD4, no MAF contamination at all and together with the Tunit box (Tunit recommened the K+N) the car is much better to drive.

As i intended to keep her car for 3 years putting in a FREE K+N filter saves me cash long term, as i can clean it and away you go.

K&N filter - £30 and lasts for ten years
LR paper filter - £4 and lasts for one year ...

You save yourself a tenner by fitting one...

Cheers

Mondo reckons there ****e. . .;)

wot they like to fit ?.. . . .

Plug 'n' play.

Mondo may theink they are rubbish but that is because perhaps he was expecting some revolutionary improvement in performance. They'll change the sound of the engine, might change fuel economy a tiny bit, might improve perfiormancve a tiny bit, will save you money on parts. The final reason is enough to do it if you plan on keeping the vehicle.
