as above folks, are there any benefits of fitting a k&n to a 300 engine??

its currently running with a kenlowe fan, EGR blocked and the diesel pump is going to be tweaked in a week or two by an ex LR development engineer who is local to me. i'm just hoping to let the little fella breath freely to get the best from the engine.

thanks.

not so much power gains..... a disco aint really gonna win any drag races;)

i was curious if it gave any benefits to breathing, fuel economy or anything else over a standard filter

The problem I have with K&N's is to keep them operating properly they need cleaning and re-oiling regularly or they clog up worse than paper filters. Yes they can improve airflow, but I'd suggest it's a paper exercise and you might see a 1% gain on a Dyno, and in real life a 3 tonne Disco isn't going any faster or better with only a 1% gain ...

Also the better breathing needs fuelling tweaks to make it more worthwhile, possibly if you're going the whole hog and de-catting, de egr ing completely (change pipewrok etc so it has a cleaner flow, it might be worthwhile but if you don't do the regular maintenance on the K&N you'll soon be back down on power!

I'd stick to a paper filter ... they still neede maintenance, but taking it out and bashing it to get rid of surface dust/crap is way easier than what you need to do to a K&N, IMHO ... ;)

There is quite a lot of info on K+N filters on t`internet, they will allow better breathing but it appears that the filtration is not as good, allowing more particulates through, and reducing engine life accordingly.
Personally I wouldn`t fit one on an offroad vehicle.
Also if you google oil filter there is quite a lot of info on the problems of cheap oil filters.

cheers

LOL, sorry .. typo, should have read 5 ... ;)

Sometimes feels like bloody 5 ... ;)

If yer gonna tweak the pump i'd be really careful on that - more fuel = more smoke. More smoke makes VOSA stop check teams twitchy, and the MOT guys rub their hands in glee....

not my MOT tester...... he is actually a genuine guy!

re: the tweak - i think i trust an ex development engineer to say it'll be fine (and if it struggles to pass an mot take it back and get it turned down again!!;)) he isn't gonna lie to a prospective customer with a 15 year old car - lets face it, there will probably be a fair bit of return trade from it!

Remember that guy "Rev James" that used to post on here ? He had heard all sorts of claims like 40 m.p.g by fitting a k & n filter. He fitted one then went on a long journey about a couple of hundred miles. When he got back checked the fuel economy and he only got 28 m.p.g. :( So he sold the Disco [ The fool]

i got a k&N copy on mine,
makes no difference whatso ever, bit noisier, but thats about it.
i'm going to replace the original filter, as i'm not happy with not being able to get the k&N
low down enough to draw in cool air rather than exhaust manifold warmed air,
probably worth trying on a snorkel, but in my experience, pointless waste of money.
also blowing smoke out rear recently so probably needs a clean, only used two months.

is there any benefits fitting one to a 3.9?

yes ........ if you also remove the cat, fit a bigger bore free flowing exhaust, better plugs and leads, a stronger coil, up the fuelling, port and polish the head ........

an air filter on its own will NOT give any gains whatsoever on any engine. if it allows more air in, the engine will need more fuel to keep the mixture correct - therefore NO gain in economy. as for power - any increase less than 10bhp is not noticable when driving, and it costs an average of £1200 to gain 10bhp. no air filter in the world is that good!!

Got an ITG filter fitted along with the snorkel

one thing I noticed recently at a pay and play site another chap had an itg filter on is td5 defender but standard air intake - he went a bit deep and ended up flooding his ecu

whilst he was drying everything out we noticed his air filter (itg) was soaking wet however it seemed to act like a sponge and no water had got in past it into the airbox.

I have seen paper filters turn to paper mache almost when they have got wet

if you aint going wading very deep I would keep stick with a standard couple of quid filter

The power gains claimed are usually because the filter box is removed and then more air can be dragged in than through the small intake pipe of a filter box.
