Just when I thought it was safe to go back in the water. The gearbox stopped working.

Did a few errands yesterday, all working well. Then sensed that the truck wasn't pulling away quite right, but he-ho possible glitch. Stopped again, engaged reverse, nothing. Engine revved , I went no where. Managed to push it backwards while it was in reverse then into drive and home.
I will sort a new filter and oil, but given the truck has done 157k should I be calling Ashcroft in the new year ? Any other less expensive solutions gratefully received.:(

Don't think so. I am going to check the oil level and replace the filter tomorrow if I can get hold of one. How much oil am I looking at for a filter replacement ?

Right. Got hold of a filter, gasket and o rings from the nice men at Dingocroft.
Genuine bits, prices are a bit scary, but not compared to the quote from the local main stealer ( not that they had them in stock !)
Drained the treacle, took it apart, nothing to scary in the sump. Filled as per lz instructions, got nearly 5 litres in, tipped the old fluid into the container and there was about 3.5 litres, is this what caused the problem ?
Just had a fooking expensive service, not impressed.
Test driven, drive seems better and reverse is working again !

Was it a Landrover specialist? Maybe they didn't follow the fill procedure. You fill it till it runs out of the fill hole. Then start the car, run it through all gears, pausing in each then re-fill until it runs out again - with the engine running. When I did this, I got another couple of litres in after it already seemed full. Maybe they didn't do the "running the engine in all gears bit"?

If the stuff that came out was like treacle, maybe they didn't service the box at all.

Looks very much like it or they would have at least picked up the level issues. It's not a particularly difficult job and I checked the invoice, I wasn't charged for a new filter or oil, shouldn't they have at least checked the oil.
Heh ho , if you want it done properly do it yourself. I will recheck the level tomorrow having used the truck today.

Auto box oil and filter should be changed every 24/30K miles.:D

Point taken, and oil was not as bad as it could have been, but they could have checked the level. I guess now I need to keep and eye on the level, hoses and the oil cooler - normal paranoia levels restored.
