I couldn’t help myself and had to have a V8, problem is I am used to Mercedes V8’s so the poor old D2 sounds awesome but is way too lazy for the 15mpg it consumes.

I see the opportunities to spend money chasing power are endless, I hate spending money only to be dissapointed and find the only way is to go all out from the start. I would be interested in hearing other owners stories.

My mates are in general consensus my TD5 was pretty good and I am mad to have ditched it for the V8, too late now I say.

Welcome..

An RPI 5.2 v8 would sort your dilemma ;) over 300hp.

The 4.0 could benefit from a cam but you ain't gonna get a rocket ship no matter what ya do!

Just how slow is it?

Manual or auto?

When you say Merc V8s, what were they in? 4x4s or saloon cars?

It's often like comparing apples to oranges and hoping that a shared number of cylinders in the same configuration would be close enough.

Probably comparing it to a 450+hp CLS motor o_O:D

An antique 1960 pushrod motor with mid 90s fuel injection aint gonna rip ya foreskin off ;)

Anybody who upgrades to a V8 is gonna have to accept the mpg.
Try and take the Merc where you take the disco:)
Unless of course you had one of those “g” wagon things.
If you want to go all out and spend money, it is available :)

Welcome.

Think you would be surprised at the price if/when they do come up.
But they don’t come up often.
But the sounds is just so nice:p when you can afford the petrol:(

So if the OP wants it,is available. Money is the question. But I won’t be taking that 1 green laning:)

Hi,

Thanks for all the replies and the kind welcomes.

So how slow is it, I think it performs like you would expect a standard 94k Mike 14 year old heavy 4x4. The car initially feels responsive but quickly ends up slow to rev and just strangled.

He is an Auto as well

My Mercedes history 500SEL,560SEL, 500SL, S500, SLC43 current,
Also 1972 Ford Falcon GT351

The RPI 5.2 sounds great, 300bhp would be enough for sure. Not sure how much that would cost.

My intention is to keep the Disco long term, in my mind it replaces my old GT Falcon as in something with a lot of character but useful at the same time. It still needs to be able to pull the horse box when asked, to be honest you don’t need a lot of power to do that.

I am ok with 15mpg.

I had thought about big valave heads, cam and Tornado with P38 MAF to start with on the stock 4.0, as could migrate those to fresh larger capacity long block.

Mostly I just want to have the Disco to feel aIive and not strangled. So if it did the quarter in say 16 secs and 0-60 in just under 8 secs. It would be awesome.

Although the vid above of the Defender LS3 looks awesome.

If I want to go faster I have the SLC43

He's an auto, and the old mere's are cars so not a fair comparison I know, happy for it to be not so fast but at least feel like it is not the asthmatic kid whilst being slow:)
