Just bought a '53 Freelander TD4 Sport 3DR. So far, so good. Has been very well looked after and regularly serviced, with 36K on the clock. However, there is a kind of muffled whirring noise at around 70mph that appears to be coming from the transmission, more from the front than the rear. It disappears around 80mph and below 60mph and doesn't happen around town, will also freewheel when in neutral, no vibration or knocking accompanies the whine. Any ideas? Sorry this is my first posting, but I'm losing sleep! Cheers.::confused:

Thanks loatmead, I'll check the pressures. Bought private from a guy in Barnsley (I live in Swansea) Drove it home (250 miles), everything else appears to be fine.Have just been to Bristol and back (200 mile round trip) again, everything fine. Mind you, this is my first 4x4 so maybe I'm just not used to the transmission/road noise.....:)

maybe have a play with tyre pressures. as little as 2 psi difference can make the ride a lot quieter. not suggesting you do this, it has to be your judgement, but running mine (td4 auto) at 35 psi, seems a lot better. best pressure is obviously different for different tyres.

also mine has a slight whine noise when gently accelerating. ease on or off the throttle by the thickness of a penny at it goes away, but really quiet.

Thanks wigleytuff. All repsonses so far suggest it's probably the tyres, out of interest, they're Conti "Contact" 235/50/R18 on the front, but what look like Conti "All weather" on the back. Tread pattern looks the same though.....
Thanks for all your help so far everyone, great forum!:)
