Hello everyone,

First off i'm new to this forum, and although don't have much experience with land rovers, I do have a little bit of experience with minis.

I've just got my hands on a Land Rover, its taxed and MOT'd and seems to drive well, the only problem is I know nothing about it!

I know its a Lightweight version, and a Diesel, is there any other information you could reveal?

Heres the dials inside the Landy:

What do these knobs and Levers do?

and this is the front:

Any info on this landrover would be fantastic, I think its a Series 3. And it is definitly ex military.

Many Thanks
John

right it is a ex miilatary lightweight not a series 3. in pic 2 the red knob is to change between High and Low range, the yellow one is to sellect four wheel drive when you are in high range, if you are in low range it is allready in four wheel drive so you dont need to press it down. The other knob in pic 2 looks like you could have a overdrive.

Hope this helps a bit

Ok, so when I move the Red knob towards the seat, (shifting to low range I assume). The Yellow knob comes up. So its in 4 wheel drive.

However what if I wanted 4 wheel drive in High Ratio, would I push or pull that yellow knob when the red lever is towards the front of the vehicle?

Thanks for your answer, it helped alot.

Anyone with information?

if you wanted to use 4 whell drive in high range you would have to push the yellow knob down. To get it to come back out you pull the red knob back to put it in to low range and then the yellow knob will come back up.

dont drive it in 4wd on tarmac , you will break the gearbox.

or is that just crapenders?

na you will fook it most probably. read the link that was posted in post number 5. the back lever (not the handbrake) is for the PTO

Yes its definitly the overdrive, is it on or off when its to the front of the vehicle?

Thats an awesome video of offroad driving, it really helped alot, thanks Bustersbus!

Its apparently a Series 2A Lightweight Air Portable.

I've looked around and all the series 3 parts on ebay etc look as if they'll fit nicely.

Can any one tell me a bit about the engine, I know its a diesel but not many of the specs.

Also ( I know I should know this) but what number is the landrover? As in Landrover 88, 90 110 etc?

I really appreciate the help.
John

Are you sure, I'd put money on it being a Ser III
The majority of Lightweights were built as petrol, so need to know what diesel has been put in before anyone can give any info. Photos would help.
Its an 88 (it refers to the wheelbase in inches)
Get advise about buying arts, there are quite a lot of sometimes surprising differences between the standard civilian vehicles and the Military ones.

Sorry, forgot the first question.
Overdrive, lever back (towards seat) normal drive, leaver forward overdrive selected.
Unlike conventional overdrives it is a two speed synchromesh gearbox so you must use the clutch when selecting or deselecting it.

Hey thanks alot Davec,

I think it must be a Series 3, all parts fit it so yeah, must be.

Thanks for answering the question about the overdrive.

Its Taxed and MOT'd, just gonna get the wheels (Chrome with paint on) sand blasted if it wont harm the chrome and respray the whole thing matt black, it'll look loads better.

Thanks for your help guys!
