Just fitted Ashcroft transfer kit

Hi all just fitted an Ashcroft high ratio transfer kit. Great bit of kit. The engine is a series 3 petrol and it pulls the ratios with ease, and makes my landrover very quiet to drive, looking forward to seeing the MPG improve and so much quieter than an overdrive.

I have a gearbox that works well but is noisey in 1st,2nd and 3rd but is quiet in 4th.

The more work I do on her the more I drive it.
So interested in any upgrades which work.

Hi Yes I built and fitted it myself in a day. Very happy with this upgrade, my land rover is a lot more relaxed to drive and quieter. The 2.25 petrol engine pulls this gearing well and I have 7.50 tyres too. It does give me the option of going down to 205/80 tyres which are half the price of 750's and still have good gearing. Your gearbox may need layshaft bearings changed to reduce the noise. Not too difficult to do. The transfer kit is £255 plus vat plus core charge of £75 until your old transfer box is returned. First gear seems only a little changed with no problem pulling away. 2nd is good for up to 30 and 3rd good for 55, if I change into 4th at 40 the landrover pulls well and is very smooth to drive. Next test is down the motorway.

First, second, and third, (and reverse) all involve the layshaft. Top gear does not .... it just joins two shafts together - they run in line with each other. My first suggestion is that you check the gearbox oil level and viscosity. Then start looking for another gear box.

My S2 (with TD engine) was noisy in lower gears. Then the layshaft broke. I could drive home in top gear using LO to pull away. Any other gear just screeched as the teeth brushed past each other.

Changing your transfer gear ratio with not stop your gearbox being noisy.

Have now driven down the M27 with 3 onboard. You can now hold a conversation! The 2.25 petrol engines pulls very well even up inclines. The engine revs are a lot less so saving wear and tear. No matter what others say, I am very happy with this conversion and happy to recommend this kit. Ashcroft is a good company to deal with too.
