Just fitted a Rev Counter

I just fitted a rev counter in the 90:





It went in with minimum fuss really, I replaced the fuel gauge which is now in the Raptor dash so the feeds were already there bar the alternator pick up. It looks like my alternator does not have the W terminal though so I'll have to pop it off and put one in, I managed to get this pic of the rear of my alternator:



I thought there were 2 spade connectors below the brown / yellow wire terminal but they look too big to connect to. Unless anyone has any ideas where the W terminal is, I'll take the alternator off later and take some pics while I install one.

While I had the dash out I noticed the speedo cable was held together with tape so I'll be replacing that too!

I don't understand how that works? I'd like to do the same thing but I can't see how it works. How is it calibrated?

It's wired off the Alternator. as iit spins it sends a pulse to the revcounter.

IIRC the pickup for the rev counter is the threaded terminal top left in your pic??

I've been having a look around and I need to go to one of the outputs inside the back of the alternator, there's loads of info out there but no definitive guide that I've found. I know the alternator knows the engine speed, my Dad has a couple of gizmo's to check the gauge is accurate once it's plugged up.

I'll check it works then post some pics as a bit of a walk through in case anyone else wants to do it.

The guy I bought the Landy off said the alternator was new last December hence the cleanliness!!

Did you manage to wire up the rev counter?

You know I never have got round to wiring it up - looks nice in the dash though... my car will be on the road by the weekend so I'll be able to take the Landy off the road for a bit to do this and a load of other jobs

Wiring it in is the easy bit - just a feed from the 'W' terminal on the alternator, and an earth.

Fitted one to my 2.5N/A a few months ago.

The tricky bit is calibrating it to your engine, if you want it to read accurately. If you can work out all the gear ratios from engine -> wheels, you can use this online RPM calculator for a given speed:

And then adjust the meter accordingly.

Personally, I just wanted mine as an approx guide, so adjusted it 'by ear'

My vote goes to the threaded terminal at 12 o'clock in the picture. Pretty sure I used a ring connector when I fitted mine, rather than a spade connector

This might help - it's not the same alternator, but the pics at the bottom might help?

I got it off eBay, I'm sure I paid about £20 so they must have gone up - it was from these guys:

I don't have the terminal on my alternator so it's a bit more of a job but I'll get into it one weekend soon

I've done the same with a Durite 4000rpm marine tachometer, good quality, waterproof and more realistic for a Tdi at 4000 rpm I'm sure the terminal @ 12 o'clock is the 'W' terminal as said before

I'll hook it up at the weekend and see what happens

Just got round to connecting this (I was in no rush!).

In case anyone was wondering it is the threaded terminal at 12 o'clock that gives the feed.

You can get a digital tachometer for around a tenner from banggood.com, just paint a white mark on the end of the crank shaft pulley, point and measure. Adjust the rev counter to match. Probably needs two people to make it easy.
