I've just swapped my clutch fork for a heavy duty one without the hole! and seperating engine and gearbox fine, swapping the fork and slave cylinder fine but just CAN not get bell housing studs to line up and sync with transmission case holes whatever I do. I spent 8 hours today and 3 yesterday on just this and the best I can do is get 4 studs on, 2 at the top and either 2 down left side or 2 down right side but nothing below. I've got a big trolly, 2 bottle jacks and a couple of axel stands and I've jacked up the back of transmission case, front of case and under the bellhousing (under clutch) in all manor of configurations, I've tried with a couple of nuts on the studs, 4 nuts onstuds and no nuts on studs but am going round in painfull circles. I just can't grt the bottom studs through the holes once the top ones are in. Any suggestions would be a godsend as I'm going mad. I swapped a 2.5TD for 200tdi a few months ago and had a few probs lining transmission housing up with bell housing studs but sorted it within a couple of hours on my own but no luck this time. Should I be jacking the bellhousing under the clutch up at all or just trans case??? Thanks in antisipation Mark.

have you taken engine out ,ithink you need to check clutch plate is central ,its no good trying to get top or bottom in it has to be supported with equal gap before you try and push together, make sure gear box is in gear

Do you a load-leveller on your engine hoist? It makes it a lot easier to angle the engine as it goes in. Getting the angle right is critical. Of course, as above - if the clutch plate isn't central it'll never go in!

As Jamesmartin says, do make sure that it is in gear and get someone to wiggle the handbrake drum or wiggle the crank pulley so as to line up the splines as it goes in.:)
