Hi,

I am new to the forum so hi, just bought a P38 after wanting a rangie for years and last night I even just went for a drive for the sake of it great! And I love it.

Execpt I was a bit of a tweerp buying and leapt in with both feet.

It is a 95 2.5 diesel, manual bronze colour, no air con, no electric seats, no sunroof. Just had money spent on suspension and all seems fine. Body really good and looks OK under neath but will go for a test shortly to be allowed on Jersey roads, so we will see.

But, she seems slightly hesitent when hot just takes a couple of seconds to fire up so can live with this. But how long before it gets worse? and should I think about getting the pump recond or just go for the hot start fix.

Advice on fixing the wing mirrors would be useful as one is masticed in postion and the on NR side the glass just wobbles around. No noise when the rocker switch is pressed.

Lastly and why I am here, foolishly I did not check the high/low range selector but I did ask if it worked which the trader told me it did.

Do I try and take the car back or try and fix it I have done a search and will try shorting the netural select switch asap as this message comes on the dash when the swtich is pressed 'select netural'. I believe I have 7 or 14 days to return the car I am only cross with myself but he did lie to a direct question.

I like the car, it is all I can afford and I bought it for a reasonable price. £1800 and it has done 130K miles.

Advice please,

Thank you.

Mark:doh:

Also no light of any sort on the H/L switch

Also does any body know the type approval number for the P38, I might need it when registering it in Jersey.

Thanks

right you have been a bit hasty, check every thing out,and i mean everything.make a list of everything that does not work.then take it back to the dealer and ask him to put right all faults.if you dont it will cost you a lot of money and heartache as well.good luck.

:welcome2:

i would agree with gem, take it back with a list of the things wrong and see what he says, otherwise throw the keys back at him, or if your any good with some spanners offer him £500 and use the rest to fix her up.

you paid the right price, and i have fitted the hot start kit to mine at 120,000,perfect from cold, but reluctant to start from hot.
if it doesn't need one yet, then there is no rush.

Hi Guys,

Thanks for the input. I have been under the car and removed and shorted the neutral switch and the H/L selector worked and she drove around wonderfully slowly. I have been back to the guy and said I think I want to return it but he offered to pay for any parts. So I think I will keep it as finding a diesel P38 on Jersey is next to impossible. I have a little list of jobs:

Rad, current one rather mucky but might be cleanable.
Been advised to change water pump to a metal finned one.
Change hoses.
Change thermostat.
Continue changing oils until they have all been done.
The oil cooler pipes from the gearbox look corroded so might change them, if available.
Front OS half shaft oil seal.
Neutral switch.
Side steps.
Turbo looks a bit oily...???

Oh yes and new discs on the front at least.
New drives seat swab, (are they avaiable)
Rear NS air spring.

So far changed the wing mirrors except the ones I bought had unpteen pins but easily adaped to the six pin plug.

So many other questions but probably better for a new thread.

Never change just one airspring on one side, you are asking for trouble as the spring rate of an old hard one will be different to a new one. Also if one is shagged they will all be overdue for replacement. Not doing it will cost you more as you will end up with compressor failure.

Hi Datatek,
Thanks, three (air springs) have been replaced along with new compressor in January so I have contacted the garage who did the work and they used Dunlop springs so intend to replace the last one ASAP. Thoughts on the other jobs would be gratefully recieved and where can I find out about replacing the half shaft seal? I have downloaded a copy of RAVA but is the stupidly expensive book (Range Rover 1995-2001 MY workshop manual) on amazon better/more useful?

Thanks

There is nothing better than RAVE:D
