Hi Guys,

I have developed a problem with my Freelander TD4 on a 51 plate, One particular day about 3 weeks ago, My partner filled up my TD4 from a Gerry can, it was raining a little, but thought nothing of it until the next day when we came to use it, we was only about half a mile from home when the car starting juddering, then it stopped so we carried on (just thought must have some water mixed in the fuel), well anyway, ever since this first episode, i keep getting the juddering intermittantly, more frequently as the engines warms up and it seems to lose power going from 2nd gear to 3rd, also once its had an episode when you stick it in reverse, a plume of black smoke can be seen and then it stalls due to lack of power, also stalls in first if i have to keep stopping for lights and traffic etc once car is up to temperature, from cold doesn't really show any signs of a problem apart from it sounds a bit rough. Any idea's? I'm quite worried it might be the Turbo but know it could be lots of things, so any other suggestions will be grately received.

Forgot to mention, it has developed a loud vibrating noise travelling at 30mph, which wasn't there before, normally just used to vibrate lots at higher speeds mainly 70mph!!! its only done 103k mileage so not that many really for a diesel.

Many Thanks

Quick note walk round your landy and check all 4 tyres are they equally worn, are pressures the same and are they a differing make....say front to back. Some idiot put different tyres on the back of mine and it was not happy....vibration and boomyness......Other than that ...the intemitant stuff seems like an engine issue....intermitant faults are a nightmare...... try fuel pressure mine failed...that was intermitant...

D3savage, Thankyou for your reponse. Tyres are all okay, so not sure what else it could be, I have a sneaky suspicion that they are all linked, going to try my MAF and egr sensor first, then i will have to take it from there i think.

If you think you may have water in the fuel system the first place to look would be the fuel filter, located in the o/s/r wheel area, on my 2005 TD4 it is in front of the wheel fixed to the body. I would look for the obvious first, as the fault started when you believed that water was added to the fuel system look where the water would have ended up.

Hi Guys

Just thought I would report back, Turns out that my rear diff bush was knackered and as such caused the prop shaft to break, so all sorted now had new prop shaft fitted and balanced and new rear diff bush, grinding noise gone, also my mass air flow meter was bust so had new one fitted and this has stopped the juddering.

Just got dodgy brakes now, found out that one of the drums has warped so its not circular anymore, so when you press the brakes it sounds like something rubbing, my mechanic has ground it back into shape but says it will probably happen again, so got to get a new set of brake drums me thinks!!!

Thanks for all who helped with suggestions much appreciated.

:)
