hang on james we may have a little crossed wire here with these bore tolerances

in my manual it shows the piston held tight one side of the bore and feeler gauge held down opposite side so my 10.5 thou will read at 5.25 thou either side

eeee blooooddy elll!
er johnny, the timing tool is home made, not by me. i cant guarantee its accuracy but it has "apparrently" timed pumps in the past. please bear this in mind!

4 thou clearance would give 2 per side ,tdi has 1/2 thou per side

that timing tool is not the problem as its timed this engine up perfectly fine a couple of times till i took the fekkin skew gear out and fitted a new bush but now theres no backlash in the gear its as if the gear is a tooth behind so i tried it a tooth forward and got it to the extreme in advance then so im thinking ive got the camshaft a tooth retarded ( behind ) on the timing chain

the tool is bang on mate ;):D

not really you bore an engine to piston size minus clearance say 4 thou then at least 1 preferably 2 thou to hone cross hatch ,pistons are sold as nominal size not actual

could it have the wrong pistons fitted james??

gems the story with the pistons is theyre 60 thou up so i had a fella thats been re-boring engines for over 30 years bore the cylinders to match the pistons within the tolerances in the genuine landrover engine builders technical manual wich he did a little on the tight side to compensate for the difference after running the rings in wich are now bang on with what the book says

ok,just a thought,so why the excessive clearance then according to what james said.

thank fook fer that

fook me, guess where they came from

hold on a minute

why the hell am i discussing the bore size and pistons when all im trying to do is get me head round where the hell ive gone wrong with nthe timing after taking the slop lift andf backlash out of the bastid spew gear ( appart from them being in the same injun as me current conundrum )

trust me yer safe mate i think the burning oil is residual from last time and left a load of oily soot in the fanimold

the thing im trying to sort is the foot down black smoke foot off whgite smoke problem ive got by attempting to remove the play in the timing drivetrain

been told by several diesel specialist firms that there cannot be any play in the timing chain and skew gear ( sort the play out and stop the smoke is their exact words ) ;)

sounds slightly like the midgets one, last owner said it had some slight play in chain. smokes white on idle but unlike yours no black when foot down

thats not entirely true there is allways play as they are gears ,hence when marking timing and checking you turn tool in skew gear against rotation so as too account for it ,poor cam timing will give white smoke

whose book ?didnt he have a mic and boreguage

not for want of telling anyone how to suck eggs or cause offence in any way shape or form but discussions about bores pistons compression ratings and all maner of things at the same time as whats currently on the table can cause confusion and doubt in any persons mind who is on the verge of panic

all i want is to sort the timing issue out

no wonder it took the doc near 2500 posts and god knows how many threads before he gave up and bought a running engine :bolt::behindsofa:
