I wouldn't & I've fitted a few wood burners when I lived in Wales. As long as the chimchiminy passes a smoke test and looks sound It'll be fine.

well i ended up fabricating a roof for the fireplace and sticking a black enamel 5" pipe a metre up into the chimney

before i fitted it i had a couple of "installers" round to give me a quote and to pick their brains and they both told me i deffo needed a liner, told me all sorts of scare stories about chimney fires and both quoted in excess of a grand just fer the liner

bugger - where is that post that sed yu was 76?:D I hope yu wasnmt being ageist, Trewy - coz there are plenty of peeps on here that do qualify.

That reminds me - wot happened to CharlesY?

He can't get onto LZ at the moment; I need to go and sort his computer for him.

Liners int cheap but a grand is taking the ****. If you decide to fit a liner at a later date. (and the stoves do burn better & more efficiently with em) You need twin walled stainless steel flue liner. Don't do what some numpty fooking Landlord did to me once. Turn up with a roll of Gas fire flue liner and expect me to fit it to a Acorn multifuel stove!! Best option of all though is to hire a proper chimchimey lining machine and lots of vermiculite/fire cement mixure and have a proper concrete liner fitted.

Oi sean I hope yer've fitted a soot door into that hood yer made. If not cut a hole in it and fit a cover over it (use asbestos rope to seal it) and secure it with self tapping screws. Cos yer need to be able to get all the fallen soot off the lid when yer have yer chiminee swept.

i have a contract with mi5 and mi6 and specialize in covert suvelliance all round the country so be careful hwos watching you !!!!!!!!!

the chimneys got a excellent draw on it so i wasnt overly concerned about it burning properly - i also needed really want to install anything to permanent as we are instending on emigrating to Skye soon and the fire is coming with us

i priced up the materials and the liner is about £40/m - i couldnt see how they'd need more than £350 of materials, leaving the best part of a grand fer labour - and both said it's a days work for one bloke - no wonder they both had brand noooo vans

yer there's a rodding hatch on the apex of the 90 bend as it comes out of the burner and the roof is just screwed to the wall fer if it needs a good clean out

Fook sake a days work  I could turn up at 08:00, fit one and be gone by 12:00 all ya do is cover up the fire place, and then either feed the flue down from the roof or drop a weighted line down and pull the flue up the chiminee. fit a clamp to the pipe seal the pot and fit a cowl. then nip down and repeat the process at the fireplace. make sure it's all sealed up and the jobs a good un.

thas why i spent £50 on some 5" pipe and an hour in the garage making the roof

i bet 99 outta 100 peeps would have fallen fer his stories of woe and spent the money

ah well

The rodding hatch won't be no good to you. When you sweep it you'll only get a 6" brush in there and you need a full size brush to sweep the chiminee. plus all the soot will land on the Hood. If you unscrew it you'll get covered in ****e. make the hatch big enuff to take a full sized brush then when yu sweep it. Tape a piece of fick cloth over the hole wiv a small hole for the rods to pass thru. after yu sweep it. Remove the rods then tape a large strong plastic bag over the opening and remove the cloth when the soot has stopped falling out loosen bag on one side and stick an hoover nozzle into get rid of the rest of the soot. Once yur sure no more soot can fall out remove the bag and stick the hoover in further to get rid of the rest of the soot.

Oh and put plenty of plastic sheeting on the floor. Soot travels a long long way!!   :D

the bloke who swept the chimney has got a fancy machine that's got a expanding brush (that fits through the rodding hole) and a coaxial vac funnel on a flexi rod that follows the brush collecting any soot that falls

i had the chimney swept before i fitted the burner and he showed how much soot would be falling if he didnt have the vac going - plenty without it going and none with it going - he said it saves having the mask the fireplace off and means there's no soot for him to clean up

Oh aye if yer get a good sweep they have all the fancy kit nowadays. I still sweep mine the old fashioned way with Rods & a brush. Once used a xmas tree to sweep a chimminee. that worked really really well :)
