Good morning,

I have a 96 300TDi Auto which I believe is a jap import (japanese stickers in the fuel filler flap and a Pioneer Avic GPS/TV etc which apparantly was only ever sold in Japan.

How can I tell 100% if it is an import?

If it is, what are the differences? I have seen mention of EDC - what is this and where is it?

Many thanks,

Mike

EDC is electronic diesel control ie the ECU for the car. Try searching EDC on this forum.

As for jap import, do you have the import papers for it? Your insurance company should be able to tell you also. Is it a double DIN avic? Reason im asking is mine has an avic in it i fitted myself but its only single din, so that doesnt *definitely* mean yours is an import!

Thanks for the reply. I tried searching for EDC but the forum came up with no matches!

Did only Japenese cars have them?

The AVIC I have is under the passenger sear but when I quoted the model number to a pioneer dealer, he told me they were never available outside Japan!

I have no import papers as I bought the car 2nd hand, but never had an issue insuring, taxing it etc.

My avic "brain" is under the drivers seat it may be possible that you have a unit that was only ever sold in japan! Such units are available on fleabay!

EDC is standard on TD5's IIRC our search doesnt recognise words under 3 charahcters so thats why u got no results with "EDC"

Failing your insurance being able to tell you, a phone call to your local DVLA office may help re: it being an import

Give the National Motor Industry Heritage Centre at Gaydon a call. They'll tell you whether the vehicle was exported to Japan (or anywhere else for that matter) from the VIN number.

There used to be a web site that you could type your VIN number into and it told you all sorts of useful info ... is it still available?
