Jammed 'starter motor'.

Hi Guys,
This is not a problem on my landy...but it would be handy to know what to do if it ever was!
My neighbours landy same as mine...(2.5 V6 Auto)...has a jammed 'starter motor'...how do you release it??
It used to be that a clout with a mallet would release it or on old type starter motors there was a 'square end' on the shaft that protruded from the 'motor'
which enabled you to turn the shaft and release it from the 'flywheel', and as you know you can't rock it in gear to release it.
Also...whilst I'm 'online' where can I get a repair manual for the 2.5 V6?...on the back of the 'Haynes' manual it says that it does not cover this car.
 
Think ya talking bout the old bendix type starter motor, the modern ones are in drive wiv the flywheel all the time. . .:)

Bendix is the word I was looking for......so with the modern ones what is it when the ignition key is turned and all you get is that familiar starter motor 'Clunk!!!!????????????':mad:
 
The clunk sound is a good indication of the solenoid not working on the freelander its fitted on the starter motor its self , the most common faults are ,solenoid [or fuse from ign/ starter on circuit], brushes worn in the starter motor, poor earth, commutator carbined up, bearing shot, hope this helps ya. . .:)
 
are you sure they are in mesh wit de flywheel all the time?? i think not.; when you turn the key the solenoid pushes it into mesh then it makes contact across the two big terminals which makes yer starter go round. so they can still get stuck. a good ****ting usually sorts them out but if it keeps doing it take it orf and clean the thing
 
I had trouble with the starter on my V6 (when I still had it). Problem was solved by replacing the starter solenoid, just like Ming suggested :D

The 'clunk' when the ignition key was turned and the starter did not operate??turned out to be nothing more than a 'dead battery' :mad:
Problem soughted.:)

Batteries are big in these motors. That was the first thing I tried when she wouldn't turn over. Took it back again when it didn't recify the fault.

@ Harvester, it's "sorted", not "saughted" ;)
