This evening has not gone as well as I had hoped, got some more of the grille on and got the bonnet release mechanism connected, only for the bolt that anchors the bonnet release cable to sheer off. So I need a new mech as well as potentially a new cable.

Looks better with the bonnet on though

Then mostly got the rock slider on, it was a complete and utter arse to fit and sits too far forward, which means I am going to have to trim the spats on the front, and will move the other one forward so they both match.

Also bled the clutch with the help of my mum and took it for a quick drive around the yard. Seems quite a bit more responsive and sounds kick ass with the straight through exhaust :D

Bonnet release and front on :)

Looks like a proper defender now.

Hoping to get it finished (or at least ready for painting) this weekend.

Well done, it's looking great. At this point you must have a massive sense of achievement. :)

When I can drive it I will. So far I keep finding parts I had forgotten about!

They look a lot like HID lights in the photo, they aren't though, just led side lights.

Rough list of what I have left to do:

- breather pipes 30 mins
- exhaust 1 hr
- prep body 5 hrs
- spats on 30 mins
- wire up fuel tanks 1 hr
- torque up suspension 20 mins
- seats back in 20 mins
- back lights on 1 hr
- mud flaps 1 hr
- snorkel 1 hr
- numberplates 10 mins
- tidy up wiring 20 mins
- bleed brakes 30 mins
- fix filler 30 mins
- stereo aerial 10 mins
- chassis bots 20 mins
- check filler plug 5 mins
- steering column bolts 10 mins

comes to about 14 hours of work. Doable this weekend I reckon.

From experience I can tell you that those jobs will take about twice that If not more. They say think of a number and double it, with a land rover, triple it.

haha, great!

Most of the jobs I have either started or done the prep for so in theory shouldn't take too long.

The exhaust will take some time as I honestly have no idea what to do with it.

i am curious - what has made you decide to paint your wagon when built ? is it easier that way - less likely to get damaged during assembly or just the way you have chosen to do it ?

i have all my panels off and im tempted to paint them now before i assemble.... is that a bad idea ?

other than that - top work , i am dreaming of this day !

Yeah your exhaust could be fun

Tidy up brake pipes .... ;)

Haha, they are a bit tidier now, but only mostly because you can't see them because of the air box!

I bought a universal exhaust bracket and looks like it might work for one of the centre section mounts.

Thanks, it has been an epic learning curve!

Mostly because I wasn't intending to paint any of it, but then the arches were a bit scabby and while I was at it I decided to do some bubbles in the doors and around the end caps, then someone informed me that I couldn't paint patches of metallic, I had to do the whole panel...so now I am painting:

- rear door
- around the rear windows and door
- front doors (even though they are knackered)
- side panels above the wheels
- roof

I also didn't really take any of the body apart, so it didn't make much difference. I guess if you do it while it is apart there may be the chance of scratching the paint when it goes back together and if its metallic it might not match. What colour are you doing?

either stratos or marine blue - with limestone truck cab roof and wheels.

its stratos at the moment with limestone (van) roof and black disco steelies.

the whole thing needs doing that much is sure - there isnt a panel on it thats not had a brush touch up to part of it with the wrong colour in its past :D

i dont want a perfect finish but it would be nice to have it all one colour - at least to start with.

Yeah, I'm not too bothered about the finish of mine, that isn't what land rovers are about!

Been up at the farm for a few hours. With the help of my sister and Sarah we have got the snorkel on, and one spat.

Had to metal rivet them on as the holes were too distorted for the plastic ones.

Also made a bit of a bodge of the snorkel and drilled the holes in completely the wrong place, but you can't tell!

Got some things done today, though not quite as many as I hoped...

Exhaust is now mostly sorted, to a fashion. It won't come off, but it is a bit close to the tyre.

I have connected up and got the tank switchover valve working, happily it just worked which is amazing! Unfortunately whilst the valve is supposed to also switch the fuel gauge it doesn't quite work like that, so I either need to get another double pole double throw switch to switch which tank the gauge reports on, or get another fuel gauge. I worked out where the sender wires needed to connect to, it turned out that there were sender wires in the loom to cater for a rear tank setup. I had connected that, so there was nowhere to connect my cable!

Not much to show for all my hard work

I also put the other front spat on, fitted the final few chassis bolts, got the seats in properly and fixed the fuel filler neck as it stuck out too far

Jobs left to do:
- breather pipes
- prep body
- rear spats on
- back lights on
- mud flaps
- numberplates
- tidy up wiring
- check filler plug
- steering column bolts

A pic of how it is now

An irritating day yesterday. I decided to start on the paint prep, so I have removed the rear door, lights, etc. and got my sister on rubbing down. Then I decided in my amazing wisdom that it would be a good time to remove the floor...

So 3 angle grinder disks later, a hole in the headlining and a lot of aluminium dust everywhere I managed to remove the floor.

Didn't get a photo, but the under the floor supports were full to the top with soil, so it was a good job I did it really.

Plus the aluminium top hat sections had corroded in half in places

Guess I had better order some from YRM.
The main supports weren't that bad

And cleaned up pretty well

I'm not looking forward to putting it all back together.
