Hi Guys,
I don't have a defender yet but i'm activily looking at the mo.
I have a jag which currently does 20 -25mpg and its useless for the country lanes to the area where i have moved. So I'm looking at getting a defender but I still need to commute 25 miles to work which is 50 miles a day.
I'm not so concerned with the ride as I know its rough as a badgers arse but I'm confused about the mpg on the SWB 90 as i've seen conflicting experiences. My brother gets about 30 mpg on his 2001 110.
What can i expect to get from the 2.5TD?

Any answers happily recieved

Thanks

My TD5 gets about 28mpg normally and 23mpg on motorway journeys, but then I do usually do 70mph+. The ride is a bit bumpy but not too bad.

Be warned though landy's are contagious!

My 300TDi does 32mpg pretty consistently and thats driving at the speed limit on most roads.

My 2.5TD gives me about 25mpg and that was running just on diesel and now on a veg/diesel mix.
I spend all my time on country lanes and quite a fair bit every week off road.
£35 did last me the week with everything i did now thats down to £29 with some veg added in.

If you get a TD5 though DON'T try running veg oil.

All the others, TDi's, TD's, N/A etc are fine but the injectors are different on a TD5.

they basically have their own high pressure plunger that runs off yer camshaft which takes the fuel pressure from around 4 bar supply pressure to about 1600 bar (around 26,500psi) inside the injector just prior 2 injection.

thats on a TD5...orthers have a normal injector supplied from a common fuel rail which is under pressure from a secondary fuel pump

Thanks for all the replies, unforunately with those stats i don't think i'll be joining the ranks of the defender owning club. I thought the 90 might deliver something better than the 110 (body weight etc) but it doesn't appear so. I'm currently spending circa 60 quid a week on fuel and it doesn't look like that would change much if i was commuting 50 miles a day :( . But X-trails and freelanders seem just awful in comparison.
I have a budget of around 9k for a machine.
