hi all i replaced all my filters the other week and i noticed when i replaces my air filter /turbo filter at the front of the engine bay that there was a rubber bung thing at the bottom i suppose to collect exces oil? but is it suppose to be sealed or a slit in it?? not sure any help would be much appreciated?

It's ment to have a split in it to allow water to come out but not in.
And if you have a lot of oil in the filter something is wrong!!

Ever heard of a car running on its on oil??
This is how it happens

I know head gasket is leaking could this have something to do with it?
im getting that done anyhow asap!

No, it means oil is getting passed the turbo.
Why replace headgasket, when you can put a little bit more and get a 200 or 300tdi engine

trying to restore it bit by bit so how would you say i corect this problem?
and will this be affecting my preformance?

Performance ha ha on a 19J you have got to be kidding right??
They are very slow engines anyway.

To solve oil problem you will need a recon turbo.

Whoa whoa whoa Before you go spending loadas of money that you don't need to spend. Oil in the filter on a TD is very common. But it's rarely the turbo. Is the engine breathing?? I:E when you remove the oil filler cap does smoke come out of it?

broken piston rings or worn bores or a partially blocked oil pick up filter as well as a blown Head gasket, can all cause "crankcase pressurisation" which will force oil into the filter housing.

whoa where do i start?
i know that head gasket is leaking gona get that sorted there is oil round the turbo. but it is old lol

the filler cap on this engine comes off so i had to hold it down with wire till i can make some kind of braket.
because the pipe whitch come to the cap is trying to push it off.

Get a new filler cap.

take the pipe off and put ya thumb over the end of it whilst the engines running If pressure builds up and tries to force ya thumb off the pipe it's crankcase pressurisation.

In fact do a search of the forum this has been covered lots of times. Think POS did a thread on how to diagnose a knackered 19J

u got a link?
lol so dont think it my turbo?
also when i strip engine down to do head gasket could i sort this problem while im down there?
thanks again much appreciated!!

It sounds like the turbo is ok. The oil in the turbo is more than likely coming from the breather that comes from the oil filler cap (which you said is coming off. Breathing heavy) to the air filter pipe. Did the air filter box have oil the bottom? ( bet ya it did).
All this is very common with a heavy breathing 19j engine. Alot of people (like me) have just relocated the pipe from the filler to inside the chassis leg until a 200tdi conversion is done. Unless you are a purist dont waste money on the engine just throw away and do the 200 conversion.
