Hi. ive been searching the forums and it seems im not the only one who has had the following problem.

We have a 2002 L322 V8 petrol which is fantastic, had it for 3 years now and it has not missed a beat however last week it flashed various warning lights (HDC, battery light amber then red. Air sus etc) the car then went into limp home mode which got us off the road) AA arrived and told me it was battery or alternator. We were relayed to a garage who called me back to say we needed a new battery and a new alternator, total cost £1200.

They did not test the alternator (and when I called for the part numbers so I could search for the parts on line they gave me the number for the Air con! So as you can imagine I now have very little confidence in them.

We have noticed a fan type sound coming from the dash after the keys are removed and the car is locked even on cold days when the engine has not even run. So were wondering if the battery drain could be due to this. it could also be a duff battery or heaven forbid a duff Alternator.

Can anyone offer an opinion on the likely causes . Are there any that I have missed that I should look into. we are going to get the garage to just charge the battery overnight and hope it gets us home then I can look into it in my own time.

Many thanks and I hope someone can help.

Alternator is no more than £490 as I've just paid this for one from Eurocarparts, you also get a £100 service charge of that back when you return the old one as it's an exchange part, about 2 hours labour more or less.Their talking utter crap, I would take it somewhere else.

I recall reading that there have been reports of battery drain caused by a failed relay/ faulty relay in the HEVAC sytem that causes a fan not to shut down when it should. I believe there is a TSB about it. If I can remember where, I will post up a link.

heater fan motor reister very coman a modified part is available battery again very coman go for the best you can afford not a cheap one normaly the alternator chews its self into pieces normaly around £400-£600 for a new unit not many exchange ones out there

hi mate,

if you mean the fan noise directly behind the passenger temperature controls on the centre console, i believe that it is the cars temperature sensor it sits directly behind that grill section next to where you can chose where to direct the air flow. This is totally normal from what i have found out researching, i thought i had the fan resistor problem and changed the resistor but it did not solve my problem so i removed the centre console fan control panel and found out that it is just the temperature sensor fan running. Make sure they allow the sat nav units to shut down before disconnecting the battery (2-5 minutes after closing or opening any doors) as disconnecting the battery with the sat nav unit still running may permently damage the unit. The garage dosent seem to know what they are doing with range rovers get it back from them quickly, fitting a battery is really easy to do your self and can be done in about 15-20 minutes.

Matt
