It's a Freelander 1 TD4 fuel pump question

Hi everyone,

tum te tum it's a TD4 fuel pump question.

I've read a few posts on this but mine has another small twist, the old girl has allways started first time on the button. Yesterday wouldn't start. Couldn't hear the fuel pump when the key was turned, so fuel pump me thinks. 4th or 5th try it started.

Started this morning fine but . . when I put my foot down it felt like the turbo wasn't kicking in, pants acceleration.

At the end of the day I'm in the same situation with it not starting, tried and tried no joy, wiggled wires, tapped fuel pump, no luck. Phoned the RAC, just as the guy says "it's a 2hour wait", I turned the key and fuel pump humms and she starts nicely. No need for RAC. On the way home no accelaration problems all running good.

When I get home I turn off and try to start and no fuel pump hum. "That's it" I think, "it's defo the fuel pump or relay". 3rd or 4th go I hear the pump and she starts but . . . the pump used to go "hmmmm" and now it makes a horrible "BRRRRRR" noise.

I am assuming the pump is knackered? And the poor acceleration is a result of that?

Any thoughts much appreciated.

yep sound like it but dont buy a cheap on you will regret it get a oem one £125 ish i used 4x4 island

It cirtainly sounds like its your fuel pump i had the same problems with mine a couple of months ago and changed the fuel pump and filter and its all good now. Like Rhodie said dont buy a cheap pump or you'll end up changing it again.

Similar problem with mine, changed the filter today still got problem starting,
Once running all is well, ho it's 2000 td4, are we talking about the pump that sits alongside the filter?

Yes. The one in front of the drivers side rear wheel arch.

I must have an oddball one, got a pump and filter located under the ecu/fuse boxes in the engine bay.

That's where they were on early vehicles as far as I know. You'll also have an 'in-tank' pump.

On the later models the pump and filter are 'conveniently' located in the o/s/r wheel arch but there's no 'in-tank' pump to contend with.

Cheers for that, it is an early one, 2000, at least its eay to find.

Hi, I'm in the process of changing the intank fuel pump because it's doing the same symptoms and noise aswell as said in the posts here.
Before you start disconnecting the fuel pipes, do you need to depressure the system first please? If yes how do you go about it?

No need to depressurise the system as its only low pressure up to the engine mounted high pressure pump. Just stick some rag under the pipes that you're disconnecting to catch the spillage.

Ya, da deisel pumpenrotten est kaput. lol!

New fuel pump + filter + bleed system = happy Freerelander once again

may i ask as mine is also under the rear wheelarch just wondering has anyone moved the pump and fuel filter into a better position under the bonnet plse

Doubt if the pump would be up to the job, you would probably have to revert to the original system of having two LP pumps again ( if that were possible as the fuel tank design has probably changed).

sorry re read my post meant moving the filter only to under the bonnet for easier access

Can't see why not presuming the filter is after the pump. To be honest with a service interval of 60,000 miles and the work involved I personally wouldn't bother especially if you have a Fuel Burning Heater.
