Hi, can any body help. I have replaced the steering rack on my LHD 2002 FreeLander TD4, I have topped up the fluid but do not have power steering and the pump made a unfunny noise,is there a method to bleed the system?

Start engine, run for 10 secs, stop engine, top up fluid.
Start engine, turn to full left hand and right hand lock, stop engine. (do Not hold on full lock for more than 10 secs.)
Top up fluid.
Start engine and run for 2 mins, turning from lock to lock.

Thanks for that ianda12, i tried that but had no luck, if you have any other ideas, or you can direct me to someone who can help id be most great full.regards Frentchy.

I'm trying to get used to this replying bit, it seems like i replied to myself? Thanks again ianda12, I WISH, i tried that, different thread sizes. Hi Ming, i investigated that possibility by slacking off a joint to the pump whilst the motor was running and got myself a face full of hot fluid. Maybe i should explain, i bought the car in the UK and it had been converted LHD, basically ok but not happy on straight roads, checked for over adjustment and found the rack was bent (i found another problem but will tell another time, scary!!)so hence the beginning of my worries.I have found couple of pipes from the system heading off behind the radiator, will have to take the front off unless someone can tell me im wasting my time.If one of you gets this reply can you make sure the other did.

Hi Frentchy, sorry to resurrect an old thread but two things....

Did you get this sorted - if so what was it?

Did you buy the car of a pair of Polish guys near Worksop?

Cheers,

Chris

Did you ever find the cause of your steering problem? I have a similar problem after a LHD conversion and...... it was done by 2 Polish guys from Worksop who SAID that they were experts, and had about 20 Freelanders in stock!
BIG MISTAKE !
My problem is that the steering is very heavy, especially at low speeds. Itoo am wondering if the pipes are connected to the rack incorrectly and I have looked at RAVE, but it does not give the rack connections. Also many other botches that I will not bore you with!

Just a PS
The pipes that go off behind the radiator are just a cooling loop. ie it goes out on one and comes back on the other, so nothing to bother about!!

Looking at the engine bay, the two hoses that run from the pump up the left hand side then plunge down the bulkhead and along to the rack.....one of them is the low pressure return and I have seen a few LHD freelanders now and noticed that they all had this pipe bent almost flat. If its kinked to far it will close off completely and block the flow.

Mine is converted from RHD (did it myself though) and I got the rack and pipes from a crashed genuine LHD and this pipe was squashed quite flat. Its not blocked completely though and still flows enough so the steering works fine. I have had a nosey at a couple of other original LHD cars and they were both the same.
