Hi i have just done the head gasket timing belt and water pump on my 200tdi i have got it all back together but it wont start  i have checked the timing and the valve clearences but still no joy. could it be air in the fuel i have loosened the pipes to the top of the injectors and there is fuel there. please help as im wll and truly stuck.

is there any smoke when you are turning it over? if not then it's not getting fuel, if smoke then timing could be out.
Have you put the lectric wire back on the pump?... probably yes if you have fuel at the injectors
leak off pipes ok ?
Check valve clearances not too tight.

leak off pipes i take it you mean the ones for the fuel return? would that cause a problem apart from leak? im not sure on the smoke i will have to check that.

TIMING! I had mine out by a toothe after replacing the belt, I ended up removing the pullys and giving everything a good clean and re-assembling everything from fresh, make sure that you have the crank timing spot on and lock the flywheel (I made my own tool for this, but you can buy them), then lock the fuel pump (9mm drill bit I think) then put your belt on, if like me you end up 1/2 a tooth out then slacken the 3 bolts on your fuel pump and turn the centre 22mm nut untill it all lines up. Don't remove your locking pins untill everything is timed up.

Well a quick update i have checked and checked the timing and it is spot on so i asked the local garage to have a quick look and they said it was fine but it still wouldnt start. so i have pulled the head off again but i cant find anything wrong. :scratching_chin: so i have ordered a new head gasket an oe one this time rather than a britpart one and i will put it all back together as soon as it arrives. hopfully this will solve it

Just check that the injector tips havn't been damaged whilst the head was off.

If you have compression and fuel and it's timed then it should go.

Did you pump up the fuel via the lift pump before trying to start it? you could try bleeding it at the injectors whilst someone turning it over for you.

out of ideas now mate.:)

thanks for the help. no i didnt pump the fuel up before i tryed to start it but it is getting fuel. the compression seems ok (just from turning it by hand) as i dont have a tester so i was thinking it must be over fueling or low on compression hence the new gasket. i will have a look to see if the injectors have been knocked. thanks again

Look at the obvious, check battery, check fuel cut off solenoid is plugged back in, check the solenoid is actually working, if you're 100% sure on timing, It could be a loose or split fuel pipe, minute i know, but after a few minutes of cranking it, you should see some sort of tell tale fuel leak even for a minute hole.

Be methodical with your fuel lines ( clean them before attempting again ) as well as your electrical circuit ( a battery that is 1 volt too low can refuse to start an engine )

It's possible a simple thing, just be patient.
