It was meant to only be a water pump change...

On our drive down to Dorset this past week to do a little camping, the water pump bearing started to go (water coming from pulley and screeching noise from water pump, as well as the pulley being a bit wobbly). Luckily, the water pump lasted the rest of the drive down to Dorset and then back home. I was paying very close attention to the alternator gauge (indication that the belt slipped off) and the temperature gauge (water pump failure).

So what started out as a simple water pump change turned into a timing chain inspection and timing cover replacement. The previous owner told me that he swapped the water pump in 2011. What it would appear that he did was reused the same old fasteners. They all started to snap off as I was loosening them. In some instances, he used a smaller bolt and nut because the thread was completely gone inside the timing cover.

In the end, I suppose it was a good thing because it gave me a chance to check the timing chain (which is in great condition, I must say). It also gives me the chance to properly torque everything when I put it back together. The crank pulley bolt was barely more than finger tight and the fasteners holding the timing cover on were the same. It's also giving me a chance to take care of the rust on the chassis.

Anyway, rant over. The Mrs doesn't want to here me ramble on about this stuff, so I need someone to vent to.

Beautiful weekend camping, albeit it a little damp. Once I get this engine back together, it's time to start rebuilding my other 3.5. Previous owner swapped the engine in 2009 and gave me the original 3.5 so I could rebuild it. Not sure it will be worth the money or the time, though. It sat rusting in his shed since 2009 with the piston in and now there is a nice rust ring in the cylinder liner where the piston rings were. More to follow...
