Got in tonight started fine as normal, drove for about 2 miles and it just stopped - engine cut out - didnt realise at first as I had the music so loud, my mechanic told me to do that because I kept complaining about all the funny noises and rattles - tried to start it and it turned over but did not fire. Left it a few mins and then it started fine drove another mile and it did the same again. Repeated above and it drove the final mile home..... Yes it does have fuel in it before anyone asks :)
Any ideas?

Sorry - 2003 TD5 DIESEL Auto, Bloody thing cost me £2500 for a gearbox three weeks after parting with £6500 to buy it if the fuel pump has gone now I am going to drive it off a cliff, thats if I can find a cliff in Derby :(

Mine did this, I cleaned sedimenter and replaced fuel pipe between filter and injector pump and.... touch wood, all is well now!

I'll start the bidding............

A fiver and a packet of smarties:D

Makes mental note:don't ever get td5 :D:D

TD5s are fine.

In this case. AS USUAL, do two things.

1. Find out how to prime the injectors.
see below

2. Remove the fuel filter (rear right wheel arch, crazy) and MAKE SURE BOTH O-RINGS are taken off with it, then fill a new filter to the brim with clean diesel or kerosene (NOT PETROL), and screw it into position. If you do not Pre-Fill the filter, you WILL send a filter-full of air into the cylinder head gallery, and it WILL cause injectors to fail to operate.

3. Sit in the driver's seat and turn IGN on. Press the throttle pedal to the floor at least five times, letting it right up every time. The fuel pump should now be running, engine lamp flashing, and every time it stops wait a bit and it will start again. Let the fuel pump run for SEVERAL MINUTES. You will hear it whining at the rear right wheel arch.

Now start the engine. If the problem doesn't happen again, the problem is solved and you can drive to the pub for a beer. If the problem is still there, too bad. You needed a new filter soon anyway, and you'll need to walk to the pub, but could drink more beer and not risk your licence.

to prime TD5 Injectors:
Key OFF, deck the throttle and hold it hard down, turn key to starter till (a) engine running as it should or (b) battery goes flat. It might take 20 - 30 seconds, and you MUST keep the starter turning even after the cylinders seem to have started some action.

Stop after 30 seconds or the starter might melt.

Wait a few minutes and do it again if you have to.

@ Dufty - more like an upside down sandwich box if you look at it from the A38... Mechanic thinks its the diesel pump! This bloody thing will be the death of me, good job I love driving it, well when it allows me too :D

Happened to me..it would run for a while then stop...the fuel gauge was showing as just under a quarter of a tank.... I limped to the nearest garage...seems it was out of fuel as the gauge was stuck....
