I have read it seems like hundred's of thread's on this subject but can't seem to sort mine. My 2002 on anything other than billard smooth roads is a hand full to keep in lane or a straight line and isn't how i think a range rover should drive. what have i done i hear you ask! right i have very good front tyres pirelli scorpion str's on std wheels i have checked ball joints for play can't feel any checked track rods no play checked drag ling bushes visibly seem OK fitted bilstein damper which has removed the steering wheel shimmy what next as i don't really want to change parts for the fun of it.

have you had the 4 wheel alignment checked? do you know the history of the car? how long has this fault been occuring.

one issue can be the drag link, for the sake of £50 its an easy way to eliminate it. i have read that if the car is following small ruts in the road surface then usually the drag link cures it.

whats it like when accelerating and decelerating and braking? any difference?

it's fine accelerating and on the brakes but won't follow a straight line on rutted/bumpy surface i have checked tyre pressures and also experimented with them. I have owned the car about a year and i think it is progressively getting worse i have not had the tracking checked. There is no vibration thru the steering at speed so don't think a balance issue

you can alter the play on the steering box,it,s a 5mm allan key in the middle of a 17mm nut, loosen the nut and turn the allan key clockwise to decrease play, but only turn a thread at a time and check the play as you are doing it,i tried with mine turned out to be the box must have had a worn internal seal or something

could be the steering system, dont know how to check it but on a vito van i had the pump go, it was getting slowly worse and at first it seemed to drift on straight roads. i trust fluid levels are ok? and theres no water etc in it.

its probably worth getting the geometry checked, have a read here for a good discription of how it all works

it must be worn component's on the steering i must admit i suspect ball joint but can't feel any play so i suppose a geo check should high light any faults i think this night be my next course of action
