Isuzu 4BE1 3.6 litre diesel in a 1982 Range Rover

I recently bought a 1982 4 door Range Rover and plan to fit a 4BE1 diesel in it. The engine only cost me $100 from a friend, I bought the Range Rover for $900, and it's in very good condition, no rust at all, I doubt if it spent much time offroad. I like the Isuzu diesel, I've got a series 3 stage 1 with the factory fitted 3.9 diesel and I really can't fault it.
I've lined up some coil springs from a 110 fitted with the Isuzu diesel and all the measurements I've taken indicate it will fit without too many problems.
Like the series 3 stage 1 I'll convert it to run on waste cooking oil.
I was wondering if anyone on the forum has done this conversion, or a similar one.

Is that motor the turbo or non turbo version ? Dont think it is used here in the Uk,I had a customer with the 2.8 td isuzu motor in an 83 4dr RR.It was ok but not really enough torque low down with the 4spd box - especially when towing.That 3.9 engine is well liked tho in Oz - I can remember trying to shake off a 6wd army Lr in a little Toyota rental when we were creeping about up "in the sugar" near Mossman Qld. The little rental didnt have a chance ! Think JRA used the turbo version in them ? I suppose it should be a fairly straightforward job,as you wont need a special conversion ring,just engine mounts,exhaust and general pipework.Keeping it cool enough might be the biggest challenge,as the RR has a more closed in underbonnet area.Or do you have a rad in mind for the job?
Cheaper on fuel than a v8 - not as smooth though ! Good luck !!
 
Eightinavee, thank you for your reply, the diesel engine I'm using came from a 2 ton Isuzu truck, it's not a turbo, though I am considering fitting a turbo to it.
You're right about the 6wd Australian army Land Rovers, they were fitted with a turbo, the 4wd 3.9 diesels were not turbo-ed, all had the 4 speed gearbox, though the 5 speed was available, the 4 speed box is considered to be a more robust unit.
thanks for your advice on the radiator, I will be fitting a heat exchanger in the vegetable oil tank, which will give the radiator more capacity, the radiator in the Range Rover looks to be the same unit as in the series 3 stage 1 Land Rover, it's probably a locally made unit, in accord with the Australian governments local content rules.
I think the 3.6 diesel will suit the Range Rover even more than the 3.9 as it has 500 more RPM and only about 5 less horse power.
