So im getting married and my good lady has decided to buy me a 1986 90 as a wedding present. (see why im marrying her?) . It was meant to be a suprise so she purchased of ebay and arranged to have it checked over to get it M.O.T'd in time for the big day (the wedding that is).

Now shes not exactly technically competant but though it was the right one for me because it was green and the pictures only had some small rips on the seats and she was sure they were cheap enough to repair.Oh and that rust on the chassis he mentioned could be repaired.!

Anyone see where this going?

So it looks like i have a new project, one 1986 landy in need of a new chassis and lord only knows what else. However i am currently enthusiastic about this and thought i come and say hello as i suspect i may well become a regular.

The plan is to do a proper job on the repair for this and see if i cant make something that will last another 25 years. Of course i do wonder just how mant times you have heard this before.

So im living in northampton and have a place to store and repair , although its a just a barn with no sides in leicster. I will probably look for somewhere i can use as a workshop in northampton when the weather warms up and i have paid of the wedding bills.

Any advice you can give me is welcome , except dont do it your mad !

A couple of questions to get me started .

1. How the helll do i get an untaxed, un m.o.t able landrover from kent to leaictser cheaply.

2. How the hell to i tell her a new chassis is going to cost about a £1000.

I work in a car dealership and the way I brought my new Disco (untaxed and unMOTd) back was to borrow some trade plates from work and book the car in for it's MOT at work for the day I was driving back.

As I understand the law, you can drive an untaxed car on trade plates (the trade plates are effectively a tax disc for one of 'your' trade vehicles). You can only drive a vehicle on trade plates if it is in connection with your business.

You can drive a car without Tax to an MOT centre, as long as it is booked in, and home again if it fails but that doesn't take care of the Tax. See the first point.

You can't Tax a car without an MOT, so no MOT = no Tax and if you have no access to trade plates then you need to trailer it.

Beware, most insurance certificates stipulate that if the car does not have a current MOT or Tax, then the insurance is invalid, so you wouldn't be insured either. A vehicle on trade plates is covered by the trader policy so long as it is in connection with the business again.

Hope this helps.
