hi
Just bought my first Land Rover 1988 110 csw 2.5td
I'm new to these engines and I noticed a pipe hanging down at the front of the vehicle beneath the engine that seems to have exhaust fumes coming from it when the truck is running and looks like it's leaking a little oil , anyone know what this pipe is for and is it supposed to be there????
Cheers

Welcome to LZ, Brett. :)

It is a crankcase breather pipe, and it would originally have been plumbed into your air intake. They are often disconnected to avoid risk of a diesel runaway.

2.5 TD are notorious for crankcase pressure, often caused by a blown head gasket, or a cracked piston in extreme cases. The fumes coming from the pipe are vapour from the crankcase. Try removing the oil filler cap on the rocker box, heavy chuffing and vapour blasting out are a good indicator of a blown head gasket.

Ok thanks for that , so there should be some vapour coming from that pipe right ?

A little. But a steady stream of vapour under pressure is a sign of trouble. Did you read up on the issues associated with the 2.5 TD, (19j ), engine before you bought the vehicle?
They are probably the least reliable engine landrover ever made.

Brilliant, no I didn't! Really good service history, engine rebuilt 1998 do just went for it , it's a really tidy truck no rust or Rot anywhere , there is no sign of water in the oil ??

There won't be water in the oil. That is not the way a 2.5 TD gasket blows. The chuffing is the usual sign. Head gasket is easy job. The worse options are cracked pistons. Or even block.

I suggest some background reading.

Hi
Gave the truck to a local "expert"
Who promptly re fit the pipe and said it was all fine , within a day clouds of black smoke and no power!!
Gave it back to him and demanded he put it right , he disconnected the breather that comes from from the oil cap ,piped it into a plastic bottle with holes in and said there you go , fixed!
It drives fine no problem but does steam from the bottle!!
No chuffing with the cap off either , very confused!

Try piping it into a fitting on the chassis! ;)

And setting the tappets.
