part of it is snapped maybe suspension or bush!!!


shock mount has rusted off, new one welded on or maybe just new rear axel, and if thats bad cant imagine what else is, i wouldnt bother!

TO MAKE THIS LANDY A1 YOU WOULD NEED THE FOLLOWING;

THE PASSENGER DOOR, ALTHOUGH CURRENTLY INTACT IS CORRODED WITHIN AND WILL NEED REPLACING, DRIVERS DOOR NOT AS BAD BUT WILL INEVITABLY GO THE SAME WAY, SO PROBABLY WORTH DOING BOTH AT THE SAME TIME.

£50 for another

THE DRIVERS FOOTWELL HAS SOME CORROSION

they all have

AS CAN BE SEEN IN PICTURE 11 A PART OF THE UNDERSIDE HAS SNAPPED (DON'T KNOW WHAT IT IS CALLED, MAYBE SUSPENSION OR BUSH???)

new axle £50-100

not bad imo. not worth more than £900 though
 
my footwells have no corroision :Dand there original :eek:

tbh i reckon its worth the price id go in couple hundred qiud cheaper as we all no landys are going for insane amounts of money atm

and ye the 2.5 turbo was never a mint engine but looked after etc they can be half decent,on the other hand tdi conversions are all simply done
 
Thanks guys.....I am guessing those prices are DIY prices?

If I was a complete Mug (and I am) how much would I be paying a garage/mechanic to do those things? or am I daft for even considering something like this with no know how...space or ability to do these kind of things myself :eek:

£40 or so an hour
 
best thing to do if buying a defender is spend a good couple hours checking EVERYTHING, any problems just meant more off the price
 
Ok I am not 100% sure but I am sure that this is the one that I traveled to see/Buy the last time it was on Auto Trader. (It is not in the same place, so it has ever been bought and moved of the farm estate I went to or sold from another friend of his if it is the case.) The owner at the time lived in Manchester and had the truck in wales at a farm he went shooting at.

I went with the cash to take it. The photos made it look good, the fact the bulk head had been replaced made me think surly no one would scrimp on the other stuff around it if it had been striped and re built. I think it had had a spray job too but with it been stood the lacker had marks in it at certain angles (may polish out)

However when I got there it was a heap, not worthy of been driven let alone been on the road! Couldnt sit in the car as the floor pans wouldnt take the weight to get in! The passanger door was stuck so I pulled it a bit and it opened but wouldnt shut! (Think he will of slammed it shut for good)

There was more rot on it than in any discovery I have ever seen so that says a LOT!

It smoked like my grandmother once it started.

Needless to say I didn't buy it for the same money £1200. And when I said to him you would be lucky to get me to part with £600 we parted ways, stopped off at nantwich to see another one that I had seen in the morning and bought that one for £2250!

Again I am going from memorie that this is the same one but it look the same and is listed the same! Just diffrent area (10-20 miles away) to where I had seen it.
Suppose the best way is to ask if the owner or past owner lives in Manchester as he was on the V5! If so too coincidental and stay away if you don't want to waste your time money or petrol!

It is so far away from me and I am completely out of my depth with the whole thing it is probably not worth it. Good to find someone that knows/may know the thing before I get too excited....will tell him upstairs he could put his cash away :rolleyes:
 
Lol may be worth getting on the phone to try and find out if it is the same one/ if the owner lives in Manchester. But I am fairly ceirtain it is that one.

As for traveling, I have bought cars and other things blind over ebay and had some good stuff as well as lost lots of money on rubbish. What I would say is this... Think about the transport cost, petrol, time, effort and risk. It sometimes makes the one that is round the corner but £500 more one a better deal.

Also just because it passed an MOT don't mean it is safe to drive. And trust me this one isn't. Well we have all seen the flintstones!

Not just that by the time you have paid to haul it back and fix the problems you could have had one loaded with extras for not much more.

Hence me buying the second one on the way home it had lots more extras, recent MOT by a national garage where the owner of the truck worked. His boss said he wanted to know if anything was wrong with it 1st as he sold it whilst at work from work premises and didn't want a bad reputation.
 
Looks like I will be practising the Virtue they call patience.....I have heard about it...just not used it :p

The only mechanic I have access to refuses to help me look for a landy....says I'm mad and keeps forcing Toyotas on me (aussie git)

My search continues.......

Slightly o/t and I hope I don't get flamed for saying this, but if you ever wanted to become more mechanically minded then a Land Rover is about the best place to start... everything is so.. straightforward... well with the early ones, anyway. Unless you are allergic to oil, anyone with some basic tools and a Haynes manual can wield a spanner well enough to do the basics, and it's surprising how quick you build a bit of confidence. Some jobs needs proper professional help, for sure, but a lot of jobs are expensive not because they're hard but more because they're time consuming... taking stuff off just to get at the bit that needs fixing... etc.

So take this forum's advice and buy a good one to start with... but don't be scared of getting a bit dirty with it, so to speak. A Landy ain't really yours until it's claimed some of your blood and skin.
