My TD4 owning days might be getting a little closer...had a look at a couple today although didn't take one for a drive as didn't have time, so do you think these are about the right price from a garage...?

2003 TD4 Kalahari, 80,000miles mot til June, 5dr = £5500
2003 TD4 Kalahari 60,000niles mot expired, 5dr = £6500

Plus an offer of £400 for my old Renault estate.

I'm not quite ready to buy yet, but do these prices seem about right for the current market? Mr Salesman reckoned they're going through about 6 Freelanders a WEEK at the moment!

nice milage,
but in these tight times I think you could get one for a much better price.
i hope you keep another few hunderd in notes for the stuff you need to replace fix in the first few weaks.

Wait till spring - used 4x4 prices are at a record high since summer 08 high fuel prcies. You could get a 54 for around 6K back then. The snow is pushing prices up and lack of supply also. Your dealer is quite correct and there is no much thats decent still available.

An 02 Serangetti like mine are selling for nearly what I paid 3 yrs ago.

Thanks for the replies. Been going to get a 4x4 since the summer but you know how it is....don't get round to it til you actually neeeeeeed it!

if you can wait till spring they might go down in prce a bit ,my freelander going by prices the now is actually worth more than i paid for it last summer!!!!

This got me thinking what happens from March this year and a little work reveals

March 2011 – Aug 2011 11

Hi, My 53 td4 with 103.000 on it cost £3300 last summer just past it mot no probs runs well, lets in water from the arial, i think you are paying too mutch

I'm with Wulfie on this, those prices do seem high.
Mines an 03 Td4 Serengeti (lower spec than Kalahari) auto 3 door
& it cost £4700 in April 2008 from a dealer with 1 years MOT & 52,000 miles at the time. It was a good deal, then the values dropped like a stone due to the governments greed attempt with proposed new tax pricing which they were forced to do a u-turn on when they got found out. Prices then very slowly started to firm up again & have recently went up because of the snow but it will be a blip. You should do quite well but keep regularly checking Autotrader & ebay to see what they sell for & you'll know exactly what's the best price for your area come summertime. You're doing the right thing by holding on & looking out. Good luck.

Ok, thanks for the thoughts, we tested two today to see what they're like as I've never driven a TD4 before. First we drove a Maasi Mara that had just come in, and to be honest a bit out of our price range at £6995 (think its a 53 plate) thought it was very smart and tidy, the clutch felt so light and springy and all gears engaged cleanly. It drove well and handled all the different terrain we could find (had it out for about 45mins on main roads, back roads, bumps and pot holes, had to pull off for a couple of tractors and very impressed with how it felt on the snowy / muddy grassy verges) but I was concerned by a slight whirring or whining which seemed to get louder as we accelerated and quieter as we slowed down. You could only really hear it if you listened hard for any noises.

Then we drove the cheaper one of the two I listed in my first post, a Kalahari. The salesman said it had only been in two days, but when I let the handbrake off, it felt like it had been sitting for weeks - clunk! If he was telling the truth, then maybe it has some break 'issues' ? But the breaks actually felt sharper than the Maasai Mara. It has a few obvious faults, such as the passenger window going down but not up, a hefty lot of blue and very smelly (dieselly pong) smoke when it was cold and a very gentle 'clunk' coming through the steering wheel which I only noticed as I was parking it back in the yard. I had a similar symptom with my car when I first got it, and it turned out to be suspension strut bearings. I got my mum to turn the steering wheel one way and then t'other, slowly, and I could see the front spring sort of juddering, or snagging. Again, the clutch felt good, light and springy, and all gears engaged cleanly, but I again I could detect a very slight whirring noise, but not quite the same as the first car. Is this a general transmission whine or a sign of something terminal? There's no MoT on it, so I would like to think the garage will give it a good check over.

Anyway, was quite fun driving the TD4 for the first time and getting an idea of what things to look for, although I don't think the dealer will want to see us for a while as the Maasai Mara managed to lock all the doors with the keys in the ignition and the window on the Kalahari wouldn't shut!

PS, was also surprised at how easy they are to reverse park.
PPS, was disappointed that there was only a radion / tape player in the Kalahari :-(

Common problem that with the handbrake & very easy to lightly grease the moving parts once you get the drum off.
