i bought a 2001 Freelander TD4 about 3 months ago and have already researched a vast amount of helpful information through the posts on this excellent forum. I feel I have been very lucky with my purchase, my Freelander’s Rear Diff had an obvious oil leak and lots of play, and the Prop Shaft was removed approximately 2 years previously so it’ was 2WD - but it was a good price so I bought it!
It made the long journey from mid England back home to Scotland without any problems apart from the air con not really working and the little swimming pool in the boot compartment (no frogs present)!
I’m only a DIY mechanic but with lots of research I have managed to fit a Rear Diff from the local salvage yard, and I refitted a prop shaft c/w VCU that i bought locally second hand, and I think I have even managed to stop the water entering the boot compartment by removing the 3 trim panels on the hardtop and re-sealing with a £2 tube of mastic sealant. I’ve also fitted a tow bar plus lots of other smaller jobs that I’ve undertaken - but I guess the MOT due next month will be the moment of truth.
I’m new to forums and to fixing Freelanders by myself - but not new to owning them, in 2000 I purchased my first ever brand new vehicle; a Freelander 1.8 3-door light blue colour, I traded this in for another Freelander in 2004, it was a TD4 facelift HSE model dark green in colour which I kept until 2013. The best thing about my ‘new’ Freelander is its a 3-door and it’s light blue just like my first one.
