As the title suggests, does anyone know of a cable conversion kit for the defender TD5? Mine is a 2000. It has the electronic throttle, but I just don't trust it! If it went tits up, I assume I am stranded. If anyone knows of such a conversion, could you please send me the link to it? Thanks in advance...

there aint one as its all electronic, you dont have a pump under the bonnet like tdi's to connect a throttle cable to

Thanks mate, is there a part that is common to go then? That way I can get a spare to keep in the car. Thanks for your advice.

The do fail occasionally, but it's probably not worth carrying one around with you all the time! You're better off with more mundane spares like a fuel filter, a fan belt, a few light bulbs, commonly sized spanners, screwdrivers, stuff like that.

throttle pots usually give notice of failure, flat spots, irregular revving at certain pedal positions, giving you time to get a replacement (A good clean usually works temporarily)

Only reason to carry a spare is if you wanted to do regular deep wading, they don't like being wet.

The throttle pot is as likly to fail as any other sensor on the engine, unless your gonna carry a set, I wouldnt bother,

Mines been perfect, accidently drowned it a few times too with zero issues. Many claim them to be water proof, still not totally certain but it has been submerged for a while.

Read about a few people moving the pot higher up though

Thanks guys, as much as I love my Land rovers, I don't trust sensors. Cant beat a good old fashioned cable affair. At least if a cable breaks you can wind the throttle open a bit to get you home ;-)

Even if you could convert it to a cable, there is still the ECU, CPS etc etc. which could fail and leave you stranded.

The throttle tends not to fail - I would be thinking about carrying other spares before I carried a spare throttle.

I carry a throttle pot along with the rest of my spares.;):D

Summit worth mentioning though is that there are 2 and 3 track pots and the ecu needs to be programmed accordingly. Earlier TD5's can only use 2 track, later TD5's can use either.

some vehicles use a cable that goes to a throttle pot within the engine bay. It may be able to do summit similar but it's not something I've ever looked into doing.

If I were to carry a sensor, I'd pick the crank position sensor. Well, in fact I have a spare in my cubby box. With pretty much everything else the ECU will revert to a default value and the engine will still run without it, but the crank position sensor has to give a signal to control the injectors. It'll even run with no signal from the potentiometer, but just at tickover speed. The car is driveable, but only very slowly.
