fitted new lucas pressure switch today, and the way i understood it is that 12v feed to switch and earthed = oil light on. oil pressure rises as engine starts and switch cut feed = oil light goes off, please correct me if this is wrong

Sorry thinking of the pressure gauge switch, you are correct so I would be checking where the 12v supply comes from. I'm struggling with a new wiring loom for the E type at the moment hence the mix up. Start by trying to get a wiring diagram for your motor:)

looks like i will have to wire a different set up in, i will run a new feed off the ignition through a bulb + holder set it dash down to oil pressure switch, this does work as i have tried it before, i looked in a workshop manual today and it seems there isn't a relay for it

That should be fine, not seen a relay in a normal oil pressure circuit.
Consider an LED for the lamp, less load on the switch:)
