is the oil cooler really necessary?

Hi all!
I have googled this but not found an answer.
I have an ex mod 90 2.5na.
Do i need the oil cooler? Does anyone have experience of running this engine without one?
The only reason I ask is out of curiosity really......

I stand to be corrected but no not for civvy use - normally the MOD fitted them for belt and braces protection when towing etc. and on fitted for radio [FFR] which would be expected to stand running for long periods - of course keeping it wont harm.................................
