Series 2 is the 2.25 diesel reliable? Should I do a conversion?

There is no reason why a 2.25d should not be as reliable as any other Land Rover Engine, modern or old, if it is in good condition and well serviced. My 2.25d is more reliable than my 2 year old 30,000 mile Ingenium JLR engine. It's never let me down in the 5 years I've had it, albeit I don't do big mileage in it.

Fast it will not be but you've bought a classic vehicle in which you probably don't want to be hooning around in :)

The car I was interested in turns out to be a bit dodgy. Its an S3 diesel on an S2a petrol VIN number. The seller is actually a guy (middleman) who buys and sells old cars and he wrote me an email advising me not to buy it after he went to view it in Germany. He also pointed out that it really is an S3 and the chassis doesn´t match.

Shame this isnt the vehicle you thought it was, but dont be put of by the 2.25 diesel. I have never had any problems with mine just regular services, and it will sit at 55mph. Although more comfortable at 50mph, and with an overdrive fitted I can sit at 60 with a top speed of nearly 70. Although I would not want to do long motorway journeys in it it is fast enough to not casue a problem and I have used it for longer journey when the 110 has been off the road. As long as it is not to tired and as you only want it for a summer/weekend classic rather than every day comuting there is nothing wrong with the 2.25 diesel.

The 2.25D engine is just as reliable as a tdi engine its just that they are very slow and noisy aspecially if you plan to tow with it, for instance years ago I was towing another swb off roader on a trailer going up that long hilly stretch on the M62 near Hartshead services can't remember the name with my then 2.25D S3 swb anyway I was doing between 10-15 mph going up the hill anyway a few weeks later I decided to fit a 2.25P and with the same trip same trailer and off roader on the trailer I went all the way up at 40mph and if it was tdi'd I think it would have done it at at least 50mph :)
