I have a Freelander Td4 blowing black smoke. In trying to locate the cause, I noticed a valve that seems to have something missing. Can some kind soul
Not sure where the oil came from.and a fair whack of Transfer box oil is that ?
The pic is (looking from the front of the engine) at the right back.I would be more worried about that... looks like there is a bracket or something missing as well... where is the pic of ? I am not a FL owner so limited...but definitely looks like a breather or something... similar to tdi cyclone breather perhaps.
Thank you for replying. It is a relief that nothing is missing. The oil may have been spilled, I will clean it up and see if more appears. There is no obvious oil leak that I can see.ref the black smoke , these are the basics to check first
1) there are no splits in the turbo intercooler hoses
2) no holes in the vaccum hoses
3) crankcase breather filter isn't blocked
see how u get on and hope that helps
After checking the hoses for the fifth time, I found a hole the LH intercooler hose. Wow, that hose is hard to get off, what an awkward connection to contend with. Will probably have to cut it off when I get the replacement hose PNH00020 equivalent.Thank you for replying. It is a relief that nothing is missing. I have checked the hoses and they seem to be intact. I changed the PCV about 12 months ago (thanks LandyZone) to the BMW part. It is clean and clear.
Thanks to all that replied.

The split is on the top, about an inch from the front clamp (which seems to have been put in by a pygmy with a right angled driver).glad u found it, was the split on the back of the bend
i replaced all mine with the silicone hoses, last longer and a lot better than oem ones
they are actually quite easy to replace in comparison , try replacing them on a D3, lol
thks for the update

I have heard good things about the silicon hoses.
