I would be more worried about that... looks like there is a bracket or something missing as well... where is the pic of ? I am not a FL owner so limited...but definitely looks like a breather or something... similar to tdi cyclone breather perhaps.

The pic is (looking from the front of the engine) at the right back.

hi @Les Cooper

that's the automatic gearbox breather , nothing missing :)

wonder why there's atf fluid around it

has it been filled up at some stage or checked

i did actually fit an extended breather pipe on the jatco gearbox and brought it up to the top of the engine , so that when u go wading , water won't enter the gearbox

ref the black smoke , these are the basics to check first :D

1) there are no splits in the turbo intercooler hoses
2) no holes in the vaccum hoses
3) crankcase breather filter isn't blocked

see how u get on and hope that helps

Thank you for replying. It is a relief that nothing is missing. The oil may have been spilled, I will clean it up and see if more appears. There is no obvious oil leak that I can see.

I have checked the hoses and they seem to be intact. I changed the PCV about 12 months ago (thanks LandyZone) to the BMW part. It is clean and clear.

Thanks to all that replied.

After checking the hoses for the fifth time, I found a hole the LH intercooler hose. Wow, that hose is hard to get off, what an awkward connection to contend with. Will probably have to cut it off when I get the replacement hose PNH00020 equivalent.

glad u found it, was the split on the back of the bend

i replaced all mine with the silicone hoses, last longer and a lot better than oem ones

they are actually quite easy to replace in comparison , try replacing them on a D3, lol

thks for the update

The split is on the top, about an inch from the front clamp (which seems to have been put in by a pygmy with a right angled driver).
I have heard good things about the silicon hoses.

where they split is, it can be caused where it rubs against the metal clip , when u fit the new hoses , cut a bit off ur old hoses and wrap it round ur new hose to prevent it rubbing against the metal bracket on the engine , u will see it when u look

just bought a set for mine, now there different but just the principle , plus i bought the T bolt clamps

are stainless steel , have a wider band on them as well so the end of the hoses get sealed properly
