HiI I think that I have a problem with the transfer box in my 91 vogue, lots of tyre squeal on slow corners and can feel a judder when on full lock.Any tips on how to check if diff is permanently locked.

Hi Dave sound very much like the viscous coupling in the transfer box has seized not a difficult job to do The people who know say it is a common problem i have had the same fault and rectified it with the help of a mate and a new VC

Reckon Iain is right - to double check whip the front prop off and see if that cures it
Then just leave it off and run around like that till you get a new one sorted
Remember to buy some ATF to top the box up with after you have changed the coupling - unless you know someone you can pinch it off, eh Iain ?
Should you no be at yer work anyway Iain ? ;)

Hi removed prop today and car feels much better . I have another question. Is it possible to fit a manual transfer box to my existing auto box I have one that is coupled to a VM 2.5 diesel. anyone know if this is possible.

Thanks again for all help

Well, yes you can fit the manual transfer box but it's not entirely straight forward
You would have to fit a new transfer box lever to allow you to manually select diff lock but this would entail changing over all connecting rods and mounting the new lever - maybe even having to change the tranny tunnel to suit
You would then have to wire up the diff lock light and switch so you knew when it was engaged/disengaged properly
Personally I think it's too much grief when you could have the VC changed in about an hour without even having to take the transfer box out
How about this ?

If you allow a morning or afternoon you will be fine
You have already started the job by removing the prop
Get hold of a manual or have a search on here or other forums - I'm sure it has been covered many times
It's a fairly straight forward procedure - as long as you have a socket set, some spanners and a trolley jack to take the weight of the gearbox once you have removed it's mount you will be fine
Access to a vice once you have the old unit out to get the bearing off would help too
Let us know how you get on
PS - you will be fine running about with the front prop off till you have the bits as long as you don't go rallying !

It wouldn't really affect off road ability as it would be the same as having the centre diff locked on a manually operated transfer box
On road it would at best eat tyres like you wouldn't believe and at worst shag something in the transmission driveline as it would wind up the transmission something rotten and put a lot of strain on it

Hi Kenny will keep you posted on job. It will be a couple of weeks before I start as I have to source parts from uk.I live in spain and there arent many range rovers over here. Once again thanks very much for your help and advice cheers Dave

Wreckhunter.long term effects are mainly excessive wear and tear on all transmission ie UJs and the transfer box itself. short term effects front tyres will vanish before your eyes and the car will feel sluggish and not responsive. When I removed the front prop it was under such tension that it wasnt possible to remove the last bolt without raising the front of the car, off road I shouldnt think the effects will be as noticable.
Hope this helps cheers Dave
