The issue sounds like a def t/b problem as they lacked top end when mated to a def g/b & 200Tdi, but neither of you have one.

Looks like the turbo and Adz to the rescue



Oh and my speedo maybe a little erratic, so the 90 may just be 85, but it looked good for abit y'know

Think my problem was/is too high gearing, mating a disco box with 285/75x16 tyres, hoping that changing them today will help

Hi Paul, Answered a question of yours in the expeditions forum earlier, did you get it?

No we're not overlandwithkids, that is Cassie, although we're travelling with our 12yr daughter (just dont publicise it). Dont feel its particuarly special have met loads on the road travelling with kids.

Okay now back to topic, drove back up to Kuala Lumpur today, got on the motorway put the car into 5th and left it there for about 100miles, before tyre change I would have been up and down the box as soon as ant slight incline presented itself, so for me it's a definate improvement, will report back on fuel consumption next time I fill up.

Sounds good Lee..Typical crap weather here this weekend so been limited in what i could do. Haven't managed to do much at all despite lots of help from Adz, Pos and others.

So i'm expecting new filters and lift pump in a couple of days..have got the weekend off so will do everything at once including stripping the top of the inj. pump. Hoping a combination of all these things will solve problem..

And just for good measure my hi-beam and spots decided to stop working...the list is growing....

Hi Storm, funny enough my headlights and spots packed up in Russia where it's a legal requirement to have headlights on all day, ended up rewiring the headlights through another relay using the side lights as the switch and dumping the spots, upside of this is that the headlights now run off the 3rd battery, downside is that I can't have just sidelights on as they all come on together.

I know it has been mentioned but have you checked to see if you have a brake binding?

No binding as far as i can tell..will be changing brake fluid as soon as outside temperature allows me to spend enough time outdoors.

Think a fuse has gone re the lights as 'flash' works as does dipped beam, have to be on all day here too..good thing, cuts accidents, increases visibility.

How did you get on with the new gearbox?

Have to agree that I think it's a good idea as well as long as they work, problem in Russia is the scumbags they call law enforcement, got fined 200 euros for crossing a white line, bastard just sat there with his gun on his lap whilst telling me the payment was unofficial, mind you after that I never paid another just sat there and shouted at them till they told me to go, got a bit hairy at times.

As for the gearbox, was a bit of a git to fit as had no lifting gear, but fitted the box first then the T/B so only had to lift 70 Kg each time. The gearbox is doing exactly what it's meant to do, we're setting off for Sumatra tomorrow so wish us luck.

I don't think it's been mentioned yet but, has your turbo seized ? A quick check is to take the inlet hose off and see if it spins freely.

Well, quick update...

I managed to get a gps reading of the 90 on the way home today, and blimey is my speedo out!! Between 8 and 13% !!

It was in km/h but i've converted to mph...not too bad until it gets to 40mp/h then it rapidly goes wrong...I didn't go flat out as it was a bit foggy on the motorway and rush-hour, but when the speedo was indicating 61mph...the gps was saying 70mph!!

Now i was on the flat as most of denmark is...and i reckon i could maybe get another 5mph out of her...but i'm happy with 75mph. I've still got to do all the filter changes and liftpump but i think i was being too paranoid. Maybe the turbo is working fine, just quietly...and 5th gear, although no grunt, would be better with smaller tyres/wheels but is nothing to worry about.

Know how you feel Storm, mine is at least 10% out as well, sounds like you're all sorted then mate.

Well it gives me a little more confidence in the turbo...shame about 5th but tbh i rarely want to go top speed as it drinks diesel...i'll tootle along at 50-55mph on the speedo!

Have yet to find out what mine now does to the gallon after changing the tyres, hoping it will be about the same as now have another gear to go at. Personally I don't drive quicker than 50mph if anything more likely to be going at 40

As the threads getting a bit long now Lee, what tyres did you have and then come down to? I've been getting 22-25mpg...but if i've been doing 70mph and not 60 that would explain things...i have a 40 mile straight motorway run every day to work.

Started with 285/75x16 mud tyres, changed to 275/75x16 road bias tyres. They are fitted to 8 inch rims that pull the beads wide that seems to make them a slightly lower profile if that makes any sense, whilst they were changing them a I put new against old and the new were definately smaller, bearing in mind that the old were worn out they were still bigger.

Ah..ok...those were a fair size then! i'm only on 235/85's. Theres various opinions but i thought 265/85 were about the limit on standard setup.

To be fair they were just about as big as you can go as standard, your 235's are probably about the same height as my 285's were because your are 85 section and mine were 75 section.

Next time i'm in the uk i'm going to borrow a set of 205's or 215's and do a comparison..i wouldn't want to go down to 205's really but i'd be interested to see if the gearing copes better with smaller set-up.
