I have a 1986 90, with a 2.5N/A Diesel, coupled with an LT77 gearbox, that is running just fine. Until now. Every time i go to grab 4th, the gear stick simply does not select the gear. I have to use massive amounts of pressure to get it to slot in, but will go in easily when stationary. My gear change pattern has gone from being 1-2-3-4-5 to 1-2-3-5 which is really irritating now. Is it on its way out? or easy fix? Thanks

I had similar trouble in my old fiesta with first gear. I found that if by pushing the stick gently it didn't go into gear, no amount of increased pressure would do it. The 'fix' was to basically karate chop it into gear- relying on momentum of the internals to engage it. I'm guessing it's a synchro wearing out.

Thanks for your help guys, today i checked oil level in the g/box and it was ATF, a clear sign that the previous owner tried putting ATF in as an attempt to improve the synchro. That went about as well as it sounds :)
